From Sydney to Boggabri: Smash ANZ and Whitehaven Coal

Throughout Februrary and March 2014 dozens of ANZ billboards were vandalised across Sydney. Numerous ANZ branch facades were painted with slogans denouncing Whitehaven coal and the destruction of Leard state forest while their ATM card slots were glued shut. During the Mardi Gras festivities numerous ANZ “GAYTM’s” were vandalised with paint and in the days following the parade two of the pinkwashed machines on Oxford St were smashed with a metal bar.

One week, three stories on the Australian far-right - Andrew Zammitt

One week, three stories on the Australian far-right
Posted on February 3, 2013

Australia’s far-right scene usually gets little media attention. Radical political movements often struggle to be noticed in the media, and that’s probably a good thing. However, it creates a discrepancy in reporting when violence is concerned.

If a far-right extremist is prosecuted for a violent crime, the arrest, verdict and sentencing are usually reported, but journalists will rarely provide day-by-day reports of the trials, interview people involved, or push to get suppression orders lifted.

Anzac Day 2014: A glorification of Australian imperialism

Reprinted from the WSWS By James Cogan 26 April 2014 Anzac Day 2014 saw the Australian population saturated with nationalist propaganda. With every organ of the mass media devoting itself to promoting the dawn services, the veterans’ marches, tales of soldiers’ sacrifices and heroism and the presence in Canberra of British royal couple, Prince William and his wife Kate, it was almost impossible to avoid.

AUSTRALIA

Climate change. It is a worry that Australia’ s scientifically illiterate Prime Minister Tony Abbott has, for his chief business adviser, one of the country’s leading climate change denialists. Maurice Newman makes even Tony look well-informed. Sadly, Tony has surrounded himself with yes-men. Notably, Greg Hunt , Minister Against the Environment has really sold out. Hunt did his PhD on climate change, but is now the strongest advocate for coal mining.
