23 Apr 14: "The creators of a new culturally acceptable screening tool which helps diagnose depression in older aboriginal people believe that it will allow the start of new processes in diagnosing a range of other mental health issues. University of Western Australia’s Winthrop Professor Osvaldo Almeida says he expects the tool will be useful to medical professionals and others who are working in remote areas."

18 Apr 14: "University of Western Australia researchers have developed a first of its kind culturally acceptable screening tool for depression among older First Nations people living in remote areas. It is widely accepted that remote First Nations peoples are not inclined to turn up to health practitioners and describe sadness or depression, and rather any undiagnosed depression needs to be detected by information gathering from the practitioners. UWA Professor Leon Flicker said the new tool "has been modified from the commonly used depression risk assessment tool Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)." "We have adapted this tool by rewording and translating some of the questions to align with Indigenous cultural norms," said Professor Flicker." By The Stringer

22 Apr 14: "The Telethon Institute for Child and Health Research and the Kulunga Research Network have released a new edition of 'Working Together: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental and Health and Wellbeing Principles and Practice'. Originally published in 2010, the book is designed for health workers, mental health practitioners, those working in areas supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, as well as students. The new edition - edited by Pat Dudgeon, Helen Milroy and Roz Walker - contains a number of new chapters, providing more information on children and young people. ... "

A report released today which collects the thoughts of around 30 elders is asking for people to support local organizations so that Aboriginal youth suicide can be prevented.

A new report - The Elders Report - has been released, where 15 elders from across the country speak candidly about the increasing loss of young lives in their communities from self harm and suicides. ... Lorna Hudson from Derby in the Kimberley says young males in particular need access to 24-hour mental health support."

24 Apr 14: "Over the last two decades rates of suicide have dramatically increased in Aboriginal communities across the top end of Australia, and Indigenous youth are most at risk. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the rate of suicide amongst Aboriginal youth is up to five times that of their non-Indigenous counterparts. In remote communities, such as the Kimberley region in Western Australia, suicide rates are almost 100 times the national average. Over 30 Aboriginal Elders from Australia’s Top End have released a new report in which they discuss the alarming increase of youth suicide and self-harm in their communities. ... "

18 Apr 14: "996 reported suicides of First Nations people from 2001 to 2010 – 1 in 24 of all First Nations deaths are by suicide. 400 suicides estimated from 2011 to 2013, up from 100 per year to more than 130 per year. It is estimated that suicides could be as high as between 1 in 12 to 1 in 16 if unreported suicides and the difficulty factor in securely classifying deaths by suicide are considered. Suicide rates among First Nations peoples in Western Australia and the Northern Territory are the highest in the nation, and among the highest rates in the world. Yesterday, I met once again with the Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, not as a journalist however as a researcher – in unveiling racism, premature deaths, unnatural deaths and suicides." But if Aboriginal peoples go stand-alone they would not be part of that 2nd rating – they would be 122nd. The United Nations Human Development Index is a measure of the quality of life across 187 nations. Aboriginal peoples in various parts of Australia continue to languish in third-world conditions despite Australia powering on as the world’s thirteenth largest economy." The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's latest report on youth justice has revealed a significant drop in the number of young people within the system. He approached us and asked if we would support both himself and his mob in the upcoming stoush after the WA Premier announced JPP as the site for the world's largest gas refinery. History will show that we agreed, and I am proud to say that not only did we assist Mr. Roe and the protection of his land, we also formed a friendship that will last for many generations. The first time I bonded with Mr. Roe was on the Manari road."
