Near-Term Human Extincton: Making the Case

Let me ask you: Do you have days when you feel we are doomed as a species? That's every day, for our next guest.

When a successful Professor of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Evolutionary Biology left the University of Arizona, for his mud hut retreat, he probably didn't intend to stir up the world. But that's just what Guy McPherson has done. He's becoming a voice for the worst fears of many people. In fact, McPherson says climate change has gone so far, so fast, humans will become extinct before 2050.

Carbon emissions rise from electricity generation - largest 2 month increase since 2006

The latest CEDEX assessment by Pitt and Sherry shows an increase in Australian electricity demand in June and July with rising supply from coal and gas since the Abbott Government abolished the carbon tax and talked about abolishing or emasculating the Renewable Energy Target with the Warburton Review. Emissions rose by about 1 million tonnes - about 0.8 per cent. It is the largest 2 month increase since 2006 according to Peter Hannam in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Today I spoke in the Australian Parliament on the need for real action on climate Change.

There is no doubt that our earth is warming and our seas rising – or that humankind is the cause.

And if we do not act, the consequences will be severe.

Governments of the world, both progressive and conservative, are making their choice clear.

Today, 39 national and 23 sub-national jurisdictions have implemented or are on track to implement carbon pricing instruments, including emissions trading schemes.

Stop the Peruvian Chainsaw Massacre

Palm oil companies have staked claims to 100,000 hectares of rainforest (photo: NASA)

Dear friends of the rainforests,

Satellite images document the ugly truth: while Peru's President Humala and his government wrap themselves in a green mantle, the palm oil industry is staking claims to vast swathes of Peruvian rainforest. How can the environment minister of Peru preside over the next UN Climate Summit while actively promoting the rampant deforestation of his own country? Help us call him out on his hypocrisy!
