Australian science blogger and author David Spratt renews his call for emergency action to save the climate. In his latest work, Spratt explains why the remaining amount of burnable carbon for a safe climate is ... zero.

All that talk of how much carbon we can burn over the next decade or two is sadly mistaken. If we have any margin left, we'll need that to grow food. Agriculture has it's own emissions, including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

That means we require a changeover in our economy as radical as happened in Britain in 1939, or America in 1943.

From Sydney to Boggabri: Smash ANZ and Whitehaven Coal

Throughout Februrary and March 2014 dozens of ANZ billboards were vandalised across Sydney. Numerous ANZ branch facades were painted with slogans denouncing Whitehaven coal and the destruction of Leard state forest while their ATM card slots were glued shut. During the Mardi Gras festivities numerous ANZ “GAYTM’s” were vandalised with paint and in the days following the parade two of the pinkwashed machines on Oxford St were smashed with a metal bar.

Australia is no stranger to drought, or predictions of long-term drying. It's possible early settlers in both Australia and California simply lucked out on a long cyclical wet period, to be followed by much worse.

Scientists in North America have discovered past droughts in the southwest, including California, lasted hundreds of years. Is this the start of the big one?

The Australian Climate change Authority has released its final assessment on what Australia's climate emissions reduction target should be. They say that the global conditions have clearly been met for Australia increasing emissions reduction from 5 per cent on 2000 levels to 19 per cent on 2000 levels by 2020.
