996 Aboriginal deaths by suicide - another shameful Australian record

Gerry Georgatos - courtesy of The Stringer - http://thestringer.com.au/ Australia’s Aboriginal peoples are suiciding at the world’s highest rates. Standalone, racially Aboriginal peoples endure horrific statistics unparalleled by the rest of Australia and more voices are rising to highlight and address what they see as criminal neglect by Australian governments. In collating data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there have been 996 reported Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suicides between 2001 to 2010.

Rael supports China’s call for a de-Americanized world

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 16 – After China’s official news agency called for a “de-Americanized world,” and referred to the United States as “a hypocritical nation with a dysfunctional government,” Rael, leader of the International Raelian Movement (IRM), issued his support for China’s position in a statement released today by the IRM.

“I totally support de-Americanization,” he said. “China should lead ex-victims of Euro-American colonialism and imperialism in this movement. It should create an alliance that includes all past victims.”

Regional Rail Destroys More Heritage

The Regional Rail Link Authority continues its merry destruction of cultural heritage in Melbourne's western suburbs. This time it is demolishing the heritage listed McKay Footbridge in Sunshine. The bridge, registered with Heritage Victoria as one of the few remaining pedestrian rail bridges of this kind and a part of the historic McKay Memorial Gardens, is being demolished to make way for additional freight lines as part of the Authority's "future-proofing" the rail system.

Victorian police raids on “Bikies”: an esculation of police state tactics.

On the 10th of October, over 700 members of the Victorian police along with Federal Police and Customs officers conducted raids on around 60 properties associated with the Hells Angels. Then in an extraordinary move the around a dozen uniformed Australian Defence Force Personal personal were involved with police in a raid on a property in Cranbourne in South East Melbourne on the 12th of October. The whole militarized policing operation has either been hailed by the media or presented in an unquestioning fashion.

Chicago student seeks contacts on Indigenous education in Victoria

My name is Kathleen Fultz and I am a Global Studies major at North Central College in Chicago, Illinois and I am currently conducting an honors thesis with Dr. William Muck, a Political Science scholar in Chicago.

I am looking at what components of the Victorian Indigenous Affairs Framework policy had the greatest impact on the education of Aboriginal youth.

More specifically, I am focusing on the policy's goal to improve the literacy and numeracy level of indigenous students in grades 3,7, and 9.
