Climate justice fast - hunger striker hospitalised

One of the three people in Canberra who have been on a hunger strike since November 6th, calling for the Copenhagen Treaty to stabilise carbon levels at 350ppm, has been hospitalised after losing 20% of their body weight. The hunger strike is part of a network of hunger strikes happening around the world in the build up to Copenhagen under the banner of the "Climate Justice Fast".

Police use capsicum at Palestinian solidarity rally

Police used capsicum spray and horses to stop a group of protestors forcing their way into a hotel in Melbourne where Julia Guillard was greeting Israel's current deputy PM and ex-PM Ehud Olmert. Three protestors were also arrested. The protest was organised by Australians For Palestine

In a possible first for Melbourne on Sunday 6th December, Melbourne Police used capsicum as a form of crowd control at a demonstration. Capsicum spray was given to Victorian police under the guise of preventing police shootings but not surprisingly is now being used as a way of controlling dissent.

Police files on desalination protestors given to private corporations

Victoria Police have handed over information on Desalination protesters to AquaSure, made up of international and local companies Degremont, Suez Environment, Thiess and Macquarie Capital Group. The 20 page Memorandum of Understanding was signed on August 28 by the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Victoria Police and AquaSure. Victoria Police have said it was routine for police to sign such deals with organisations building big public projects where there were potential security risks.

Climate civil disobedience action in Canberra for 40% carbon reduction target

Two hundred people blockaded Parliament House in Canberra today calling on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to secure a strong, legally binding treaty at the upcoming international climate negotiations in Copenhagen. Police arrested 130 people, although it is believed none were charged.

Firefighters turn climate heat on Canberra

Sydney IMC: Firefighters demanded action on climate change from politicians in Canberra on November 19 while much of south eastern Australia sweltered and suffered with temperatures well above 30 degrees. Many regions were declared severe, extreme or catastrophic fire danger.

Fifty arrested over pulp mill in Tasmania

Fifty protestors were arrested on Thursday 19th November in an act of civil disobedience on the steps of the Tasmanian Parliament in Hobart. The protestors were not only calling for the mill to be stopped but against the corrupt passing of the Tasmania Pulp Mill Assessment Act that fast tracked approval of the Mill.

If like me you thought that bludgeoning baby seals to death was something that ended years ago, then think again: this year over 60,000 harp seal pups were slaughtered, and the figure would have been five times larger if fear of a European Union ban on seal products had not led many fishermen to stay at home (source: http://www.harpseals.org/).
