More tobacco, less health care as Trans-Pacific Partnership secrecy tightens

The secret Trans-Pacific Partnership is about to become even more secret, perhaps seen as a necessity in light of plans to make it easier for tobacco companies to sue while making health care more difficult to obtain.

Tony Abbott to slash aid to world's poorest

The Coalition’s plan to cut foreign aid by $4.5 billion over 4 years is a kick in the teeth to the 1.2 billion people living on less than $2 a day.

Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey’s announcement comes on top of the $5.8 billion worth of aid cuts already signalled by the Labor Government.

Both major parties are failing to live up to the promises that all politicians made at the last election – to increase foreign aid spending to 0.5% of gross national income by 2015-16.

Declaring Syria regime illegitimate sends strong human rights message and exposes lenders

Over the last year, a religious antipoverty organization has met with U.S. Treasury and White House officials to encourage them to declare the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad an illegitimate government. This action would impose restrictions on lending to Syria that supports its military or the needs of the Assad regime. When governments or financial institutions make this declaration it lets lenders know that if they lend to Syria they may not receive a return on their investment.

Sustainable Energy Association rates the green credentials of the parties

The Sustainable Energy Association of Australia (www.seaaus.com.au) has released its 2013 Policy Scorecard in advance of the Federal election on 7 September. SEA’s Scorecard evaluates the policies of the leading political parties against the needs and objectives of the sustainable energy industry.

Why Aboriginal Australia should reject constitutional recognition

by Chris Graham

That a first world nation like Australia actually has to “debate” the merits of removing racially discriminatory powers from its founding document speaks volumes about us as a people. It begs the question: why would a nation which claims to respect basic human rights need constitutional powers to discriminate on the basis of race?

The original intent of constitutional reform is, broadly speaking, three-fold.

1. To amend the preamble to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s special place in Australian society as the original custodians.

Good news, the earth & its nearest planets are very far away from a black hole

At the centre of every galaxy it is predicted that their is a black hole & this black hole is the vortex of the galaxy & attracts matter & transmutates matter at its singularity creating intergalactic gas & the intergalactic gas condeses then creates stars, planets & so forth.

The Good news is that we can migrate to the approx 1000 confirmed planets & many moons that have been discovered without being worried about being sucked into our milky way's galaxy black hole, for the black hole is very far away from our section of the galaxy.

GetUp! BANNED off the airwaves

I'm just off the phone after dozens of radio interviews. Our member-funded ad calling out Murdoch's bias is causing quite a fuss.

Already, 830,000 people have seen the ad on air or online -- but now all three major TV networks are pulling it off air and refusing to run it.1. Some of the network representatives told us directly: they're not running the ad because they don't want to criticise Rupert Murdoch.

Massive poverty levels ignored in election campaign

Why have the major parties totally ignored the issue of poverty?

2.3 million Australians now live below the official poverty line.

"In a wealthy country like Australia, it is not acceptable for more than 2.3 million people, nearly 600,000 of whom are children, live below the poverty line," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson for families and community services said today.

Late degenerate capitalism: 'It's all bullshit' Kellie Tranter WikiLeaks Party Senate candidate for NSW

It seems to me that economists generally, with some exceptions, do have a bit of a monopoly on delusion. Fallacious assumptions ground their theories, information everywhere seems to be skewed, predictions are made without an acknowledgment of the full extent of fraud and corruption (which is rampant), and conflicts of interest regularly creep in.

Many are asking, what will happen to Greece and the eurozone and what will it mean for Australia?

Fallacious assumptions ground their theories, information everywhere seems to be skewed, predictions are made without an acknowledgment of the full extent of fraud and corruption (which is rampant), and conflicts of interest regularly creep in.

Concerned about WW3? The time is NOW!

Australia couldn't have chosen a worse time to be president of the UN Security Council in its temporary role there. Its main ally, the USA, is avidly seeking another war, this time with SYRIA. Australia's prime minister until the September election, Kevin Rudd, is brazenly advocating an attack on Syria and last year, the foreign minister, Bob Carr, exhorted the assassination of Syria's president Bashar al-Assad ( http://www.indymedia.org.au/2012/10/13/bob-carr-the-intended-assassinati... ).

Australia's hottest year in 100 years

"I say 'welcome to climate change' when people come here. We will not stop telling people that it is a real issue for humanity."

Four sleeps until election day and, as illustrated by the above quote, the stakes couldn't be higher.
