Massive poverty levels ignored in election campaign

Why have the major parties totally ignored the issue of poverty?

2.3 million Australians now live below the official poverty line.

"In a wealthy country like Australia, it is not acceptable for more than 2.3 million people, nearly 600,000 of whom are children, live below the poverty line," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson for families and community services said today.

The Labor-Greens carbon tax hoax

By Patrick O’Connor, SEP candidate for Melbourne: 6 July 2012 Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s carbon tax finally came into effect on July 1. The Labor government and its de facto coalition partner, the Greens, marked the occasion by again boasting of the measure’s environmental and social credentials.

To the beleaguered league from the future

by Christian Bentley

It is easy to notice that we have two Coalitions in this country, as the ever so observing Mr. Abbott so politely feels the need to whine about to every corner of Australia.

But who cares? Both are incompetent. Both are unwilling to change for the better. Both are old, both are obsolete, both are clueless, and both are so desperate to cling on to every and any form of power that they have left, so much so as that they'd sell their souls to keep it.

Green illusions and the carbon tax: article by Tim Anderson

Below is a very interesting article that Tim Anderson, an academic from Sydney Uni published on his Facebook page. It includes in my opinion a very cogent critique of the embrace by the Greens and the environment movement of "market solutions" to Climate Change such as the Carbon Tax and Cap and Trade schemes. He highlights the foolishness of believeing that anything other than direct investment in renewables, regulation and removal of subsidies to fossil fuel will bring our emmissions down.

Australian Senate motion is an insult - people will continue to die in custody and be incarcerated at unbelievable rates

The Human Rights Alliance: Deaths in Custody: Australia's horrific record - The Australian Senate lets us down. Motion is an insult.

The Australian Senate approved the Greens Motion to acknowledge the rising Aboriginal incarceration rates and deaths in custody in lieu of Friday 15, April which marks twenty years since the release of the 339 recommendations and Final Report of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

Gillard announces interim carbon tax to tackle carbon pollution and climate change

Australia is to get a carbon tax from 1 July 2012 as one cornerstone policy for tackling the challenges of climate change, announced Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Greens leader Senator Bob Brown, and Independents Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor in Canberra yesterday. The interim carbon tax is proposed to run for 3-5 years, rising by a set amount each year, to be followed by a full cap and trade emissions trading scheme linked to international markets. There would be no international offsets allowed for the interim mechanism and agricultural emissions would initially be excluded from the tax.

Greens sell out big time to federal ALP

In return for the ALP "considering" policies such as a free dental system, fortnightly meetings with the PM and most ludicrously a committeee to "investigate" a carbon price the Federal Greens have entered into a formal partnership with the Gillard led ALP. Given the ALP has already stated it will not be introducing any price on carbon until after the next election, the Greens have sold their soul for less than crumbs!
