Incredibly, the European Commission intends to declare oil palm plantations as forests. The obvious trick aims at wiping aside the worldwide opposition to the destruction of rain forests to use the land for oil plantations – according to the motto: no forest is being lost.

As the 6th anniversary of her son’s death approached, Gail Hickey called on supporters to make 14 February an International Justice for TJ Day (see below). Answering this call, the Indigenous Social Justice Association – Melbourne (ISJA-Melb) organised a rally at Fitzroy Town Hall attended by over 40 supporters, followed by a march to the local police station.
The 2nd anniversary of Kevin Rudd's apology to the Stolen Generation saw protests in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Alice Springs against the continuing discrimination against Aboriginal People epitomised by the invasion of the Northern Territory under the name of intervention. Around 300 turned out in Melbourne for a rally starting at the MAYSAR Sport and Recreation Centre in Gertrude Street before marching through the streets to end on the steps of Parliament House.

Captain Peter Bethune has boarded the Shonan Maru No 2 to make a citizen's arrest of the captain of the vessel. Peter Bethune's ship, the New Zealand registered high speed trimaran the Ady Gil owned by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Foundation, was sunk by the Japanese whaling ship the Shonan Maru 2 on January 6 after it was purposefully rammed endangering the lives of the six crew.

Climate action group inc3 (Inner Northwest Climate Change Community – http://www.inc3.info/) are holding a screening of the climate change movie ‘Age of Stupid’ on 22 February (details on website – http://www.inc3.info/index.php/film-night) and thought it appropriate to invite the local state and federal members. Friends of the Earth have described the proposed Waratah Coal Galilee mine, the world's largest coal mine, as another nail into the coffin of our climate. Goodooga, northwest NSW, 7 February 2010 -- An Aboriginal leader warns that changes to the welfare system will cause a major jump in petty crimes, as people steal to survive, and increase the number of children being removed from their families.

The Japanese whaling harpoon vessel the Yushin Maru 3 has rammed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Bob Barker about 180 miles off Cape Darnley in the Australian Antarctic Territory. The ramming penetrated the Bob Barker's hull creating a 3-foot long 4-inch deep gash in the mid starboard side of the Sea Shepherd vessel above the waterline. The Yushin Maru suffered minor damage to its hand rail and hull. No crew from either ship were injured.

The Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker has found and re-engaged the Japanese whaling factory ship, the Nisshin Maru at at 67 degrees 10 minutes South and 67 Degrees 07 Minutes East. The Nisshin Maru and two harpoon vessels were found on February 6, 2010 at approximately 0430 hours (Melbourne time).
The Sea Shepherd flagship, the Steve Irwin, is en route to join the action after refueling and reprovisioning at Fremantle in late January.

Climate activist groups Beyond Zero Emissions and YCAN (Yarra Climate Action Now! are planning to hold weekly ‘rebranding’ sessions outside the office of Labor State Minister Richard Wynne all the way up to the election in November – “or until the Brumby Government implements some decent climate crisis policies!” Six similar actions were held last year, and this was the first of 2010.
