Climate justice fast - hunger striker hospitalised

One of the three people in Canberra who have been on a hunger strike since November 6th, calling for the Copenhagen Treaty to stabilise carbon levels at 350ppm, has been hospitalised after losing 20% of their body weight. The hunger strike is part of a network of hunger strikes happening around the world in the build up to Copenhagen under the banner of the "Climate Justice Fast".

Police used capsicum spray and horses to stop a group of protestors forcing their way into a hotel in Melbourne where Julia Guillard was greeting Israel's current deputy PM and ex-PM Ehud Olmert. Three protestors were also arrested. The protest was organised by Australians For Palestine

In a possible first for Melbourne on Sunday 6th December, Melbourne Police used capsicum as a form of crowd control at a demonstration. Capsicum spray was given to Victorian police under the guise of preventing police shootings but not surprisingly is now being used as a way of controlling dissent.

Union calls for 40% emissions reduction target and abandonment of CPRS

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) which covers many of the researchers and academics who work in science, economic modelling and related fields, has called upon the Federal Labor Government and opposition parties to abandon the proposed Emissions Trading System, the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) legislation and instead develop a national pollution reduction strategy that does not primarily rely on market mechanisms.

Police files on desalination protestors given to private corporations

Victoria Police have handed over information on Desalination protesters to AquaSure, made up of international and local companies Degremont, Suez Environment, Thiess and Macquarie Capital Group. The 20 page Memorandum of Understanding was signed on August 28 by the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Victoria Police and AquaSure. Victoria Police have said it was routine for police to sign such deals with organisations building big public projects where there were potential security risks.

Aboriginal elder calls for national meeting to “talk of a new way”

Goodooga, northwest NSW, 5 December 09 -- Aboriginal political activist Michael Anderson is calling for a national get-together early in the new year to “talk of a new way”.

Mr Anderson is the last survivor of the four Black Power men who set up the Aboriginal embassy in Canberra in 1972. The leader of the 3,000 Euahlayi was also involved in Walgett with the “Freedom Ride” through rural New South Wales in the early 1960s with the late Charles Perkins.

Marine Scientists call for climate action over Ocean Warming and Acidification

A Marine Climate Change reportcard released by Australian Scientists has warned that: ocean temperatures have warmed; the flow of the East Australian Current has strengthened, and will likely increase a further 20% by 2100; Marine biodiversity is changing in south-east Australia in response; and declines of over 10% in growth rates of massive corals on the Great Barrier Reef are likely due to ocean acidification and thermal stress.

Gerard Martin claims people who don't live in his electorate have no right commenting

As part of the public inquiry being carried out into Carenne Special School on Sydney Indymedia, I contacted Gerard Martin, member for Bathurst about serious issues at the school. I asked him whether or not he still believed the organisation at the centre of the Carenne Gate affair still delivered best value for dollar following the release of documents on Sydney Indymedia clearly showing they had defrauded the NSW government.

Goodooga, northwest NSW, 26 November – Euahlayi activist Michael Anderson says the organisation being put together by Tom Calma totally ignores the more aggressive Aboriginal voices and will have prominent conservative Aborigines as key stakeholders.
Mr Anderson states in a media release that this is likely to repeat a history of conservative Aborigines joining forces with conservative government to thwart grassroots needs and aspirations.

Environment minister says Germany can't halt nuclear exit

Retreat from nuclear energy can no longer be halted, Germany’s new Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen told daily Bild on Wednesday.

“One can use atomic energy in the long run only when the majority of the people accept it,” he said. “This hasn’t been the case for years and in my estimation it’s not going to change.”

Coal protestors appealing damages order over Brisbane climate direct action

Two climate protesters were sentenced today in Brisbane and ordered to pay damages of over $3000 to Queensland Bulk Handling Corporation after a protest at the Brisbane coal port in October where they halted coal loading and had to be cut free of port infrastructure.
