350.org - A failure in Australia in 2010?

Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org called in September for this years 350.org global actions on the 10/10/10 to be direct action focused. As far as I am aware the biggest action to occur in Australia on this day was the Hazelwood demo in Victoria. This action attended by 300 people did not contain any direct action component nor did any other actions around Australia on this day.

Climate banner at opening of Parliament

As all the members of parliament assembled in front of the House for the Opening of the new government this morning: they could not fail to notice the 10m banner screaming: CLIMATE EMERGENCY. [350] Why were we there, straining with the banner, in the wind? This new parliament has been elected by the Australian people with the expectation they will work at emergency speed to protect our ecosystems and economies from climate change.

Climate change activists close Newcastle coal terminals, call for Gillard to act

Climate activists have closed down the three coal export terminals at Newcastle harbour, the world's largest coal export port, stopping all production and loading. "Urgent action against global warming is needed. We have been forced to make our dramatic protest today because the Federal government is failing to take any action." said Anika Dean from Rising Tide Newcastle.

Only 3 weeks to go till the International Day of Climate Action on Sunday, 10th October. Last year, this was the world's most widespread day of political action in history, and this year the protest at Hazelwood power station will be the lead Australian event for this day. Images and media from Hazelwood will therefore be seen around the world as this global day of action unfolds.

New coal-fired plant for Victoria one step closer

Showing the lie of Brumby's pre-election promise that Victoria would cut its greenhouse emmissions to %20 below 2000 levels by 2020, HRL has signed a deal with a Chinese company to construct a new $750 million brown coal powered plant. The plant which still needs approval from the EPA is being sold as "clean technology" as it is "only" as polluting as black coal!!! It also puts Brumby's promise to shut a quarter of Hazelwood by 2014 in a new light too - it will just be replaced by a new brown coal plant.

Brumby acts to neutralise climate change issue for Victorian election

The Victorian parliament tackled climate change on Friday with a climate bill passed in the Legislative Council with support of Liberals and Greens members to set a 20 percent emissions reduction based upon 2000 levels by 2020. "This is a significant Bill which has the potential to stabilise and then drive down our greenhouse emissions, while also creating certainty for investors and industry, and many new jobs across the state," said Friends of the Earth (FoE) campaigns co-ordinator Cam Walker.
