Earth Hour Hazelwood protest charges dropped

Victoria Police have withdrawn charges made against climate protest organiser Damien Lawson only days before they were due to go to trial on Friday 23rd July.

The charges were laid after Mr Lawson, Coordinator of the Victorian Climate Action Centre, was arrested during an Earth Hour protest at the controversial Hazelwood power station.

One of Australia's most eminent climate scientists Professor David Karoly was intending to give evidence at the trial outlining the harm caused by the power station.

Australia 'a crime scene' and 'undeclared war zone' since white invasion

Australia remains an 'undeclared war zone' and has been 'one big hell of a crime scene' since the white invasion and needs a treaty between the colonisers and the Aborigines, a recent Aboriginal summit in Melbourne heard. Robbie Thorpe, committed activist on issues relating to Australian history, Indigenous sovereignty, lack of treaty, land-rights justice, genocide and national denial made the allegation.

"People have known that but don't want to recognise it. They don't want to recognise our humanity...they can't afford to...it'd bankrupt them totally and utterly."

Victoria targets solar energy as new report shows renewable energy potential

Victorian Premier John Brumby has announced a feed in tariff for large scale solar thermal power plants to start the transition from coal-fired power to renewables as part of its forthcoming policies for action on climate change. The target of 5 per cent of the state's electricity from solar by 2020 is in addition to the 20 per cent power from wind by 2020. The announcement comes as a new report confirms that Victoria could supply more than 100 percent of it's electricity from renewables. Friends of the Earth, Environment Victoria and the Greens have all welcomed the changes.

ETU in Victoria cuts ties with the ALP

In a blow against the corrupt support of the Union movement for the now very much anti-worker ALP, the ETU Victorian Branch has severed ties with the party. It will no longer donate $80,000 a year to the ALP. This is entirely appropriate given the ALP keeping of ABCC and the fact that its Fair Work Act keeps so many provisions of Work Choices in tact.

Warrnambool jumps racing protest 11th July, 2010

The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses was there both to monitor the jumps races and to continue spreading the message that jumps racing must be banned. It received coverage in the Warrnambool Standard and made the news on WINTV in country Victoria. Many thanks to the 10 volunteers who gave up their Sunday to be there. 3 jumps races were run. There were no falls or deaths recorded. However, one horse, STOP THE TRAFFIC, was bleeding from both nostrils. Several others landed awkwardly.

How to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2020

The public launch of the Beyond Zero Emissions report - Zero Carbon Australia 2020 - was delivered to an overflowing audience at Melbourne University last night. The report is one possible blueprint for acting on the challenge of climate change by converting the existing coal and gas fired carbon pollution dependent electricity generation to 100% renewables using only current technologies in ten years.

Brumby considers partial closure of Hazelwood while climate activists urge full phase-out

Friends of the Earth has welcomed the revelation that the Victorian Labor Government is considering closing down a quarter of the capacity of the Hazelwood brown coal-fired power plant, but has maintained a call along with other climate change and environmental groups for a full phase out of the developed world's dirtiest coal fired station replacing capacity with renewable power generation and energy efficiency savings.
