Australian Paper - the Scrooges who stole Christmas

You may have heard the story in the media about the paper company Australian Paper attempting to force it's staff at it's Maryvale Mill to work on Christmas Day. And surprise, surprise the "Fair Work" Australia Commissioner (thankyou Gillard and Rudd for keeping Work Choices going, just renaming it) is ready to fine staff if they don't comply.

Swan Island court case # 2 – another victory! A reflection by Jessica Morrison

It was over five months ago, in the depth of a chilly Victorian winter day that about forty people gathered in front of the Swan Island military base. They had just been to court and witnessed four activists have their charges of trespassing onto the base be dismissed by a Magistrate. The group sang songs; chalked the footpath with messages for peace; spoke to an aid worker in Afghanistan; heard from an ex-serviceperson; and then held a die in. At the end of the die-in, nine activists refused to get off the road.

Eureka 156th anniversary to be marked in Ballarat

One hundred and fifty six years after the Eureka Rebellion was drowned in a sea of blood in Ballarat on the 3rd December 1854, diverse opinions are still held about the Rebellion's significance. Trans people are targets of hate violence wherever they threaten the straightlaced rules of gender and sexuality. Because capitalism uses sexism, heterosexism and racism as its chief weapons of control, trans sisters and brothers are the most demonised and abused, especially if they are of colour. Some studies reveal that more than 50% of transsexuals have attempted suicide at least once by their 20th birthday.

CSIRO: South East Australia becoming drier, global warming implicated

A new report into the changing climate of South East Australia and particularly the Murray Darling Basin indicates an increasing risk of below average rainfall and runoff into streams and generally drier conditions. The change in the climate has, at least in part, been attributed to an increase in atmospheric anthropogenic greenhouse gases associated with global warming.
