Coal power up: Victoria fails to diversify electricty generation

Victoria's reliance on coal fired electricity has increased in the last decade, with both electricity generation and greenhouse pollution from coal increasing by over 9% since 2000, according to a report commissioned by Environment Victoria - Victoria’s Energy Mix 2000-2009 (Download PDF). The increase is despite the exponential growth in the wind sector, which has barely replaced the decline of hydro power due to drought conditions and climate change.

Come confront the faceless puppeteers of the coal lobby and make the message loud and clear - YOU CAN"T CLEAN COAL!

Despite worsening predictions about the effects of climate change on
our planet, Peter Batchelor, the energy minister for the state Labor
government, continues to be in bed with the coal industry, supporting
the continued operation of Hazelwood Power Sation, one of the
world’s dirtiest coal power stations. At this upcoming coal conference
at which Batchelor is speaking let's let him know through our loud non-violent protest that we want real action on climate change.

Hazelwood's profits jump 40 percent

In another indication of the sorry state of climate politics in this country - the dirtiest power plant in the industrialized world run at near capacity last year boosting profits for British Multi-national - International Power - by 40%. They made $387 million from belching carbon into the atmosphere. The Victorian Government increased Hazelwood's life from its scheduled shut down in 2009 until 2031. Why would the private operators shut up shop when they are carrying off hundreds of millions of dollars in annual profits.

The Brown Mountain landmark trial has begun!

After months of preparation, our legal team and supporters have gathered in Sale and begun the two-week Brown Mountain landmark trial.

Everything is going very well so far. It’s difficult to report on a hearing that is in progress, particularly since we are the plaintiff, so this article might lack a few things.

Our lead barrister, Debbie Mortimer SC, spent Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning in Court outlining what we say are the facts and the law, in a fascinating opening submission.

TRU energy profits from polluting

TRU energy which owns Yallourn Power station in the Latrobe Valley enjoyed a large rise in profits last year up 22% to $A105.8 million. This money goes to the shareholders in TRU energies parent company CLP (China Light and Power) a Hong Kong based mult-national. The profits according to the Age come largely off the back of record output from the carbon belching brown coal electricity generator Yallourn in the Latrobe Valley.
