Hans Blix tells UK it does not need Trident. But war is already a little nuclear

By Silvia Swinden, courtesy Pressenza International Press Agency

At the Hay literary festival Hans Blix, nuclear weapons inspector whose advice was spectacularly disregarded over Iraq’s WMD, has told the UK that renewal of its Trident nuclear capability with a cost of £100 billion would not serve any purpose, or make Britain safer. He suggested it may have more to do with pride than protection.

Coal seam gas: not worth the risk

I’ve just had an opinion piece published in Farm Weekly about the campaign against coal seam gas.

“At a community meeting on coal and gas in the Hunter Valley last weekend, the crowd was dotted with woollen beanies and Akubras alike.

I attended the meeting as the Greens’ environment and mining spokesperson and I was pleased to see all types of folk there – some were locals, some had come from Sydney or Melbourne, others had driven for hours from properties that provide this nation with food and fibre”

What are they trying to hide about the Manus prison camp?

Journalists aren't allowed in, the Human Rights Commissioner was barred from visiting, and the Government's own Immigration Department found it posed serious health risks. What is the Government trying to hide inside the Manus Island detention centre?

Song: "What can we do about global warming?"

Oliver Swingler sent us the song below and hopes we like it. Sing to the tune of "What can we do with the drunken sailor?"

What can we do about global warming?
What can we do about global warming?
What can we do about global warming?
Shrink our carbon footprint!

1. Walk, cycle, bus and train
Car share, avoid the plane
Holiday at home, learn to love the rain
Shrink our carbon footprint!

2. Insulate homes and get them lined
Stop oil, gas and coal being mined
Use tidal, solar, wind and find we'll

Is socialisim & capitalism the same old evil ?

How about academic anarchy where students get to share & develop their projects as opposed to working for a corporate bureaucracy.

Why Celebrate on Mabo Day June 3

When Australia was invaded and colonised on the 26th January 1788, the British colonisers acted as if this land was uninhabited. Over forty thousand years of civilisation was swept aside in an orgy of destruction that resulted in the violent dispossession of people who had a long and fruitful association with the land.

For 204 years the legal fiction of TERRA NULLIUS - the land of no one, was used to legally reward the murderers who colonised this land although the original inhabitants had never ceded sovereignty.

Kids, sports and gambling

You know something is deeply wrong when kids no longer quote player statistics, they quote betting odds.

Just like overpriced pastry goods and a crowded train ride home, taking the kids to the footy is now inextricably linked with exposure to gambling. Whether it's constant updates on live odds or watching Tom Waterhouse sign autographs at half time, seeing gambling in sport is unavoidable. Kids can't even watch the game at home without being inundated by ads urging people to have a punt.

Call to debate Aboriginal sovereignty in the Sydney Opera House

By Michael Ghillar Anderson

A recent comment made by one of Australia’s leading constitutional lawyers, Prof George Williams, demonstrates the incapacities on non-Aboriginal legal experts to see beyond the legal system that they are sworn to serve and uphold. Prof Williams was responding to statements by Fred Hooper on the recent Declaration of Independence by the Murrawarri Nation.

A fair media - let no threat get in the way

“It is not enough for journalists to see themselves as mere messengers without understanding the hidden agendas of the message and the myths that surround it,” said John Pilger.
