The bloodbath of my family‏

Nisha N.

The following article is based on a speech given at a recent rally in Melbourne.

In a village in the Vanni region of north-east Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) demanded the Tamil civilians move into the “safety zone”. It demanded they leave all their belongings and walk towards the soldiers with their hands raised high.

Afraid of getting shot, they screamed: “Please don’t shoot us!”, and walked slowly towards the SLA with the hope of surviving this ordeal. What awaited them was a blood bath.

The Green scare hits Australia

With the Herald Sun and The Age hyping a threat by the Earth Liberation Front against the Hazelwood power station's boss it looks like we now have the equivalent of the 1950's red scare going on. Death threats are something that are sent to public figures everyday, but rarely reported. In this case the government and coal companies are attempting to smear anyone opposing coal and particularly those who use direct action.

Update from the Sydney G20 Solidarity Collective

Trials of the three remaining arrestees from the anti-G20 demonstrations in Melbourne 2006 will begin on June 30 at the Melbourne Magistrate's Court. We urge people to come to Melbourne to show their support and political solidarity to the arrestees.

These trials do not mark the first of such kind, but more importantly, they do not mark the last. We need to build a strong culture of providing meaningful political solidarity to those targeted by the state.

Censorship and self-censorship

My latest blog rant approaches the issue of censorship and why we need resources like Indymedia. It was inspired by the latest of many attempts by mining companies and their cronies to silence my reporting on community radio 4ZzZ102.1fm in Brisbane. I've self-censored names to protect the innocent.

Key environment groups dump ACF over carbon trading

In an historic move, several of Australia's key environment groups have abandoned peak environment group the Australian Conservation Foundation for it's support of carbon trading. They have formed a new alliance they are calling "Plan B".

Friends of the Earth Australia (FoEA) said in a statement that, "We’re concerned the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are already above safe levels, and the CPRS will not effectively reduce carbon pollution."

Thousands of donors rescue top Green politician from bankruptcy

Thousands of Australians have rescued Australia's top Green politician, Senator Bob Brown, from a legal bill that would have bankrupted him. He ran up the bill defending his native Tasmania's magnificent old growth forests against logging.

In a note of thanks for donations to court costs he said the action against him was "typical of the pressure tactics used by the native forest logging industry".

Here's the text of a round-robin email from him:

Dear Friend,

Use it or lose it - Australia loses energy daily

By Ray Wills

Calls by the Rudd Government to “use it or lose it” could also equally apply to Australia’s renewable energy resources, according to the Western Australian Sustainable Energy Association Inc. (WA SEA).
‘Australia wastes energy every day, with enough renewable energy to power all of Australia going unused across Australia every day,’ says Dr Ray Wills, WA SEA Chief Executive.

Climate emergency: Thousands march for action across Australia

Rallies were held in capital cities around Australia, with people siting down outside Kevin Rudd's city office in Sydney and a sitdown protest in front of the Melbourne Town Hall where the Victorian State ALP conference was ocurring.

Coroner finds Aboriginal elder "cooked to death" in a police van.

In a damning and disturbing finding today the WA Coroner has released their report into the death of Aboriginal Elder known as Mr Ward. The Coroner found that Mr Ward has died a "ghastly" death and essentially cooked in the police van he was being transported in. This case shows up both institutionalized racism and the flaws in the privatization of correctional services. Justice needs to be served in yet another Aboriginal Death in Custody.

Action on climate change demanded by thousands on Melbourne's St Kilda Beach

Thousands of Melbourne people rocked up to St Kilda Beach to be part of a Climate Change Human Sign near the St Kilda Sea Baths. The event was organised by Locals into Victoria's Environment and promoted by the Climate Emergency Network and is a call for politicians at all levels of Government to make the hard decisions by legislating to drastically reduce carbon emissions and negotiate meaningful international carbon reduction targets at the Copenhagen Conference of Parties in December 2009.

The Federal Government has been much criticised for its Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme in that too many free permits were handed out to business and targets were set far too low. In the budget handed down by the Rudd Labor Government the environment and climate change funding was relegated to second fiddle to economic recovery.

In Victoria the Brumby Labor Government is proceeding with a Desalination plant for Melbourne which will boost carbon emissions. Alternative water sources that are less costly and more environmentally friendly, such as stormwater harvesting, rainwater tanks and tertiary treatment and purification water recycling have been passed over in favour of a high tech, high cost and polluting solution.

Climate protest highlights environment funding in the Australian Budget

Photo courtesy Rising Tide NewcastleEight people were arrested in a dramatic climate protest at Canberra during the 2009 Government budget session over the Government's inadequate response to climate change. So, how did the Environment fare in the budget?

"This is a historic level of Commonwealth investment in solar energy and public transport and we warmly welcome it. The money for solar gives a good kick start to this crucial industry of the future. In contrast, the $2 billion of new funds over nine years for carbon capture and storage research is public money not well spent. The companies that make huge profits from mining and burning coal should fund the research into technologies that may – or may not – help reduce Australia’s carbon emissions in ten, fifteen or twenty years." summed up Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) executive director Don Henry.

Expanding tuna cannery in Papua New Guinea threatens local communities

In Australia the practice of SLAPPS is well known to environmental and social justice activists. A SLAPP or Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation has been around in practice since the 70s when then Queensland premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen raised many nuisance law suits against his detractors as a matter of course. Such cases keep activists stressed out, cost them money and sometimes affect their ability to voice and enact actions against the company or government they are protesting. However, SLAPPS are a bit of a luxury in non-western nations. In Papua New Guinea the effect of collaboration of corporations and government have run legal and environmental roughshod over local activists and indigenous communities defending their homelands. The outrageous case of the Ok Tedi ruling, effectively making illegal the protest by affected peoples of the Ok Tedi mine, is a glaring example of this cronyism.
