Save the Children, National Children's & Youth Law Centre and others speak out against Labors Internet censorship regime

We oppose the Federal Government’s plan to censor the internet through mandatory ISP-level internet filtering technology.

While we wholly support measures that effectively prevent the distribution of material refused classification under laws that properly respect free speech, this proposed filter does not meet that aim.

The proposed filter fails to meet the test of an effective child protection measure that respects the rights of children. Mandatory internet filtering curtails our human rights without offering any effective protection for children.

ALP approves new uranium mine

The Federal ALP government announced the establishment of a fourth uranium mine in Australia, following through on its 2007 decision to abandon the "3 mines" policy which it adopted in the 1980's. The Four Mile mine, 550 kilometres north of Adelaide, will open next year after winning clearance from federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett. Its predicted annual production of about 1400 tonnes, it will boost national output by 13 per cent to 12,100 tonnes.

In 1994, Labor M.P. John Newman was gunned down in his driveway. It was Australia's first political assassination. Newman had made many enemies with his blunt style.

Fourteen years on, no-one has ever been convicted of pulling the trigger. But Phuong Ngo, a local councillor who lived in Cabramatta, was convicted as the 'mastermind' and has spent ten years behind bars.

Another G20 Trial - Sydney Activists face County Court in Melbourne

The trial of two Sydney activists began in the Melbourne County Court today. Tim and Sunil are facing two counts each of aggravated burglary, which can carry a 25-year jail term, for allegedly walking into offices on ‘Corporate Engagement Day’ two and a half years ago with nothing more than glitter and water pistols. They each also face two counts of criminal damage and and unlawful assembly for the same incidents, which were part of protests against the G20 meeting in Melbourne in November 2006. They are fighting extremely serious charges for what was a benign and fairly standard action.

Cancel Talisman Sabre, peace campaigners demand

The US-Australian Talisman Sabre military exercise due to start tomorrow (6 July) at the Shoalwater Bay Training area near Rockhampton will be met by peace campaigners calling for the war games to be cancelled.

?These exercises are rehearsing for the next invasion. Clearly this is something the Australian people don?t want,? said Denis Doherty from the Australian Anti-Bases Campaign Coalition (AABCC).

?Defence has no mandate and no right to conduct these war games and should stop immediately. They are trampling on democracy.
