Unions back the fight for Aboriginal rights in the NT - public meeting next Tuesday

Come hear about the struggles against the NT Intervention (renamed “stronger futures”), income management and the proposed Muckaty radioactive waste dump.

Many unions have been actively involved in assisting and campaigning with communities on the “intervention” – what does the new policy mean? Help raise awareness about the impact on communities who will live under the “stronger futures” legislation.

I have been contacted by the Toomelah Elders’ representative and asked to consider the situation at Toomalah in northwest New South Wales.

I have concluded that there are three central issues that confront the Aboriginal People of Toomelah, based on the discussions that I have had with representatives of the Toomelah Aboriginal community.

More hot air cuts required for renewable energy surplus

By Ray Wills

As a business chamber, the Sustainable Energy Association of Australia welcomes measures in the Federal Budget that will support private investment in a more sustainable economy for Australia.

Treasurer Wayne Swan has said the 2012 Budget is “investing in productivity and competitiveness by building on key improvements in health, education, infrastructure and clean energy.”

‘SEA has been arguing for almost a decade for growth in jobs and the economy by building renewable energy projects,’ says Prof. Ray Wills, SEA Chief Executive.

Lizard's Revenge - Shut Down Roxby 14.7.2012

Recently BHP Billiton announced it proposal to expand the Olympic Dam Uranium Mine in South Australia to become the largest open pit and uranium mine in the world. Traditional owner Uncle Kevin Buzzacott and activist/musician Izzy Brown are organizing the Lizard's Revenge. On 14th July people are gathering for three days to shut down Roxby Downs which is irreversibly poisoning the land and water, contaminating its workers and spreading its deadly export to the Fukishimas of tomorrow and to war zones in the form of Depleted Uranium. As well as blockading the Lizard Festival will include solar and wind powered cinema, Theatre, Cabaret and Art installations, and over 20 musical acts.

Sleeping underneath the ground there is an old lizard, Kalta the sleepy lizard. The lizard ain't so sleepy anymore. Stand up and boogie down at the Gates of Olympic Dam 14th July 2012

Court Protects Animal Exploiters, Activists Fined

The legal system has failed the hens once again. Almost one year since ALV's rooftop protest at an Egg Production Factory in Somerville, the Somerville 12 (pictured above) faced the Frankston Magistrate Court. All 12 were found guilty of "Refusing to Leave Private Place". Although no convictions were handed down, the activists were fined $1,000 each.

The Australian prison system has failed; warehouses of illness & death. Bring on Bastoy for starters

Gerry Georgatos
If you want to know the hearts and minds of a nation, of its consciousness, of its legislators, then day and night look into our prisons.

The two century old modern day prison experiment is failing, that is if we look at the spiralling incarceration rates, adult and youth, and if we look at re-offending rates, the recidivism.

My PhD research argues that people who enter the prison experience, who are incarcerated for relatively short or long terms leave the prison experience worse than they came in.

From the Treasury

We're writing tonight from the basement of the Treasury building where we've just finished reading through this year's budget papers.

This is a budget with many things to celebrate: the beginnings of Denticare and a National Disability Insurance Scheme, and the delivery of the Government's commitment to invest in Australia's Clean Energy Future.

Give refugees a warm bed in a real home to get them started in a new life here

Australians are opening their homes to asylum seekers, and GetUp members are invited to take part. Click here to find out more.

Imagine an Australia where refugees who seek our help, and have committed no crime, are not locked up for months or years. Imagine that instead, we give them a warm bed in a real home while they get started in a new life.

On recent revelations concerning sexual culture among student youth at the University of WA

Dear A.,
The University of Western Australia (UWA) is in the news ('The West Australian' - and online). Apparently these days UWA orientation camps are fuckfests. There has been a scandal this year about a 17-year old woman possibly being raped, and multiple reports of sexual harrassment. It confirms what I suspected about contemporary youth sexual culture - there are many categories on the web (erotic sites) depicting freestyle sexual behaviour (sex parties, etc.) among student youth in many countries.

In advance of budget, Opposition MP demands end to “age of entitlement”

Reprinted from the WSWS By Patrick O’Connor 5 May 2012 An extraordinary speech delivered last month by Liberal Party shadow treasurer Joe Hockey, “The End of the Age of Entitlement”, outlined the program that finance capital is demanding be implemented in Australia, in line with the savage austerity measures imposed against the working class in Europe and the US.
