Julia Gillard links intensity of bushfires with climate change as NSW survives catastrophic fire conditions

On Monday the Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard visited the bushfire devastated town of Dunalley in Tasmania and expressed her support for the residents of the town, many of whom lost everything, and outlined emergency assistance measures being taken by both the Federal and Tasmanian Government.

She also said, very briefly, that bushfires were part of Australian life in a hot and dry country. But then she went a step further. She acknowledged that climate change contributes to the frequency and intensity of bushfires through more extreme weather events like the current extreme Heatwave.

Opens with a review of record heat and fires in Australia. Is coal destroying the country? Plus the under-reported monster storm in the Philippines, and Mexican gangs investing in coal.

Plea of imprisoned youth sentenced to death by Iran's Islamic regime

The message of imprisoned youth sentenced to death by Islamic regime.
To all the people of the world in my age group:

I despise thinking about my death; I do want to take my life aspiration to the grave with me.

My name is Zaneyar Moradi.

At this moment sitting in my death cell, my prison cell in Iran under Islamic regime, I wish to talk to all youth in Europe and America, and I want to speak to the people of my age who are living in Japan, Australia, France, and Africa and all over the world.

Please DO NOT LET THEM HANG ME!

Nepalese journalist buried alive

A group of Maoist former rebels have been arrested over the death of a journalist during Nepal's civil war, with one of them confessing the reporter was buried alive, police say.

The arrests of the five men, whose detention came days after a Nepalese soldier was held in Britain on charges of torture, are the first in Nepal for crimes committed during the decade-long conflict that ended in 2006.

The five men, all middle-ranking cadres, have been charged with the abduction and murder of Dekendra Raj Thapa, a radio reporter and human rights activist who died in 2004.

Uncovering the real hoax: ANZ Bank greenwash while financing coal and climate change

For a moment farmers, conservationists and climate campaigners in the north west of New South Wales thought one of the big four banks - the ANZ Bank - was living up to it's sustainability charter and taking a lead: acting ethically with regard to not destroying agricultural land, maintaining biodiversity and preventing climate change.

A media release purportedly from the bank said it was withdrawing it's $1.2 billion loan for Whitehaven for development of a new coal mine at Maules Creek on agricultural and forrested land near Narrabri, New South Wales. Further, the letter said that "ANZ is currently undertaking a review of coal and gas investments on productive agricultural lands and areas of high biodiversity."

But it was not to be.

Tasmanian bushfires catastrophic but no confirmed loss of life

After the first day of Tasmania's devestating bushfires which destroyed over 100 homes and businesses on the Tasman peninsula, the Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced an emergency assistance package to Tasmanian Bushfire victims. The Insurance Council of Australia has also formally declared the Forcett and Dunalley zone of south-east Tasmania a catastrophe. This means that insurers will establish a taskforce to escalate the industry's response.
