International day against multinational corporations - 22 July 2010

Joanne Dateransi from Bougainville was one of the speakers at a rally organised by LASNET at the State Library of Victoria as part of a worldwide day of protests against the ever-growing pernicious influence of multinational companies. She spoke chiefly about the history of mining giant Rio Tinto’s operations, and opposition to attempts by the company to resume mining.

Call to protest at refusal to prosecute killers of Mr Ward

"The decision not to charge two security guards over the heat stroke death of West Australian Aboriginal elder, Mr Ward, in a prison van is as outrageous as the cowardly decision taken by the Queensland DPP in the Mulrunji Doomadgee death on Palm island in 2004. To protect then Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley from facing charges the Qld. DPP overturned the recommendations of acting state coroner, Christine Clements, bravely found (some would say foolishly found) that Hurley definitely had a legal case to answer." said Ray Jackson, President of the Indigenous social justice association.

Death in custody at Ivanhoe gaol on 3 June

ray jackson, president, indigenous social justice association

i am reliably informed that an aboriginal inmate, name not known, was found deceased in his cell this morning. his age was given as 36 years old.

the gaol governor at ivanhoe has stated the inmate died by natural causes. such terminology generally hides a multiplicity of concerns.

his cell-mate is said to have stated that his mate complained of becoming all sweaty and cold and had pains in his right arm. whether assistance had been sought during the evening is not known.
