The Rad Library is a community library that appears in Hyde Park every Sunday afternoon between 12 and 5pm. We have a collection of books, DVDs and zines that you can borrow (yes, take home to read/watch), and return at a later date.
The library is special (rad) because it is full of resources, most of which:
- are hard to find and/or expensive to obtain
- present perspectives and voices that are often marginalised in our society
- are donated by people who hate to see things collecting dust on shelves when they deserve to be read or watched!
A rally in Perth on March 22 by the Deaths in Custody Watch Committee protested the increasing moves for prison privatization and in particular the death of Aboriginal elder Mr Ward while he was in private prison transport. The rally called for these services to be returned to public operation where they are accountable to the public through parliament.
The secretary of Western Australia's prison officers union, John Welch, called on the government to tear up its contract with the private company responsible for prisoner transport.

United Voice Press Release: Wed 02 Mar 11 Officials and members from United Voice were involved in a protest against public hospital privatisation which blocked the traffic on St George’s Terrace this morning. Commuters were held up for around 90 minutes before police moved seven cars which stopped the traffic in front of the Premier’s office in Governor Stirling Tower.
United Voice organised for the keys of the cars blocking the terrace to be brought to the scene as soon as police said it was a public safety issue.

It is a long hot summer in Perth with new temperature records being set. Perth has just broken its record for the greatest number of consecutive warm nights. The last 14 consecutive nights the temperatures has remained above 20 degrees. The previous record was 13 days in February-March 1985 and February-March 1990.
In January 2008, Aboriginal Elder Mr Ward died in custody from heat stroke in a van contracted out to the company G4S. In January 2011, WorkSafe charged G4S with failing to ensure the safety & health of Mr Ward, resulting in his death.
The Deaths In Custody Watch Committee believes the privatisation of prisoner transport must be ended. Mr Ward's death clearly and tragically showed that the privatisation of prisoner transportation... leads to a lack of accountability and poor service delivery. Peoples’ lives need to be put before private profit!
