Cut pollution - Make clean energy cheaper

Pollution from burning coal, oil and gas is driving a climate crisis, making our world more dangerous, increasing prices of food and water and jeopardising our way of life.

But if we cut pollution and invest properly in the clean alternatives, we can build a healthier, cleaner, more secure economy and community for all of us.

The best way to do that is to put a price on carbon pollution and use the revenue to help householders and invest in renewable energy, energy efficiency, public transport and forest protection.

Fuckwalk Melbourne – Protest at Anti-Swearing Laws – 25 June 2011

Following on from the successful ‘Swear-in’ on June 3rd, opponents of the government’s proposed permanent legislation allowing for on-the-spot fines for indecent, offensive or disorderly language organised a ‘political fuckwalk’ from Flinders Street Station to the Bourke Street Mall on Saturday 25 June. The initial gathering at the station was rather chaotic, but once the walk got underway the message came over fairly loud and clear. Once arrived at the mall the crowd was addressed by speakers from a convenient cherry-picker, while police and TV crews looked on…

From the award winning director of The War on Democracy & Year Zero: The Silent Death of Cambodia, this film is a powerful and timely investigation into the media's role in war, tracing the history of 'embedded' and independent reporting from the carnage of World War One to the destruction of Hiroshima; from the invasion of Vietnam to the current war and disasters in Iraq and Afghanistan.
As weapons and propaganda become even more sophisticated, the nature of war is developing into an 'electronic battlefield' in which journalists play a key role and civilians are the victims.

World Refugee Rally in Melbourne 2011 Coverage

On World Refugee Day on Sunday June 19th, rallies were held around Australia including in Melbourne. In Melbourne the crowd heard from well known human rights lawyer Julian Burnside. He was quoted on the ABC online as stating:

""If (Ms Gillard) were in that position, what would she do? What would you do? Wouldn't you want to make a run for safety? Wouldn't you want to get your kids to safety, wouldn't you want to do what it takes to get yourself to safety and make sure you have a life," he asked the rally.

The Gillard Labor government promised last year that all children would be released from detention by June, and then Bowen announced that all children would be released from detention by the end of June. Now it is clear that the government isn’t fulfilling their promise. They now say half will be out by the end of June.

The Refugee Action Collective (Victoria) is urging refugee supporters to protest outside Broadmeadows Detention... Centre to hold Labor to account for not releasing all children from detention. No child should be locked behind fences for the ‘crime’ of seeking asylum.

An Australian woman earns 18% less than a man! That means the average superannuation pay out for a woman will be half that of a man’s by the age of retirement! If the pay gap doesn’t change, today’s 25-year old women will retire one million dollars worse off than their male counterparts!
