We are asking for you to join with us at a Peoples Assembly in Canberra at the opening of Parliament on Tuesday 28 September (2010).

We will assemble on the lawns outside Parliament House to call on the new Parliament to introduce humane refugee policies and stop using refugees as political footballs. Refugee groups are asked to bring banners with the key messages of the gathering as well as their own messages.

Explosives depot threat to Sunshine Coast hinterland

Just when we thought the pressure was off the Mary Valley for a while after the scrapping of Traveston Dam, there's a new threat to the area. A proposal currently being assessed by Gympie Regional Council could see the Moy Pocket quarry in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland become the site for an explosives storage and distribution facility that would provide explosives for extractive industry operations throughout south-east Queensland.

Claims made by the Queensland Premier, Ms Anna Bligh, that the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam near Gympie in the state's southeast will save threatened species like the Mary River cod, Mary River turtle and Australian lungfish from farmer-induced extinction have outraged people across Queensland.

The Save the Mary River Coordinating Group President, Glenda Pickersgill said by far the greatest threat to these species survival is building more dams and spillways.
