UN told Australia failing on the rights of Aboriginal and refugee children

A delegation of Australian child's rights advocates and experts is in Geneva briefing the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child on Australia's failing to properly protect the rights of Aboriginal and asylum seeker children. They will point out that indigenous children have mortality rates three times higher than their non-Aboriginal peers and that around 400 children are currently being held in immigration detention.

NT and Bankstown join forces in campaign for moratorium on income management - Barbara Shaw in Sydney

NT Aboriginal leader Barbara Shaw has arrived in Sydney on a speaking tour to build support for the campaign against income management and the NT Intervention. Her full itinerary is listed below.

On Thursday 6 October, Ms Shaw will visit Bankstown in south-west Sydney to speak at a public meeting launching a national campaign calling for a moratorium on government’s income management.

Bankstown is one of five trial sites across Australia facing the introduction of income management from July 2012.

Nuclear radiologist exposes myth of medical argument for ‘remote’ waste dump

The Australian Greens today welcomed comments from a leading nuclear radiologist shattering the myth that a waste dump is needed in outback Australia to house low-level radioactive medical waste.

Greens spokesperson for nuclear affairs Senator Scott Ludlam said the comments from Dr Peter Karamoskos, ahead of the Senate debate on the National Radioactive Waste Management Bill, exposed the dishonest campaign to impose a waste dump on Muckaty Station in the Northern Territory.
