50,000 opposed German nuke waste transportation

“The CASTOR consignments stand for everything I hate about this country and this system: police protecting big-corporate interests, democracy ignored, parties that only lie, media that only propagandise instead of reporting independently, inhumane technology, lobby-driven policies.”

The words of one of 50,000 protesters who over the weekend went to the tiny village of Gorleben in central-north Germany, which normally is home to 600 people, to oppose the 12th delivery of nuclear waste containing the radiation equivalent of about 100 Hiroshima bombs.

“Jobs with Justice” – Melbourne anti-Intervention rally

Rallies were held around Australia on Friday 29 October under the banner of ‘Jobs with Justice’ and an end to the Northern Territory Intervention as part of a National Day of Action. The rally in Melbourne attended by approximately 500 people ended with a sit-down at a major city intersection, bringing peak-hour traffic to a halt for over twenty minutes. No future in forest furnaces

27/ October/2010 - Independent Forest activists painted a 20 meter slogan reading “No Future In Forest Furnaces” on prominent Hobart southern outlet Water tower.

Activists are responding to the industry push for investment into Woodfired power development during recently announced forest negotiations. We see this as a provocative and very unhelpful move by
forestry interests to cling to a dying woodchip industry, dragging down Tasmania’s native forests with them.

Climate protestors descending on Hazelwood power station

Approximately 300 climate activists have converged on Hazelwood Power Station in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria to demand its immediate shut down. The protest is one of the over 7000 thousand protests planned on the 10/10/10 to mark the annual 350.org protests. The protestors are planning to build a model of a solar power plant to symbolise how Hazelwood could be replaced to create a carbon neutral future.

Pirate protest: Forbes global CEO conference!

A group of "anti-corporate pirates" protested outside the Forbes global CEO's conference at the luxury Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney on Sepetember 29, 2010. Corporate pirates were plundering and destroying the earth and exploiting the world's majority, said Pirate Paul Benedek. "They are giving us grassroots pirates a bad name!"

Climate change activists close Newcastle coal terminals, call for Gillard to act

Climate activists have closed down the three coal export terminals at Newcastle harbour, the world's largest coal export port, stopping all production and loading. "Urgent action against global warming is needed. We have been forced to make our dramatic protest today because the Federal government is failing to take any action." said Anika Dean from Rising Tide Newcastle.

Queensland's Labor government, one of the biggest backers of coal mining, is calling for public submissions to protect strategic cropping land now under threat from mining.

It is prioritising the fertile country of the Darling Downs around Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley, closer to Brisbane.

But now an Independent MP, Peter Wellington, who holds the Sunshine Coast hinterland seat of Nicklin that covers Nambour, Yandina, Bli Bli, Woombye, Palmwoods and Eudlo, has sprung a surprise on the government.

One detainee dead - protests continue at Villawood Detention Centre

In another tragic event in an Australian detention centre a 36 year old Fijian man has jumped to his death at the Villawood detention centre on the day he was to be deported. A number of Tamil and Afghan asylum seekers whose claims have been rejected and who were alsoupset at the treatment of the Fijian man then climbed on the roof at Villawood, threatening to jump. Their banner read "We need hope and freedom". A number of solidarity actions were organised in Sydney, including two people being arrested after locking on at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Eventually the Tamil and Afghan asylum seekers got down off the roof, only to be replaced on the roof by a second group of Chinese detainees

Afghan asylum seekers break out of Darwin detention centre

The second protest by inmates at the Darwin Detention Centre in a week saw 92 rejected Afghani asylum seekers break out and hold a peaceful protest along the Sturt Highway before being arrested by police after seven hours. A solidarity protest was later held Sydney. In a punitive move, the Afghan protestors have now been moved to the remote Curtin Detention Centre.

Stand Up For Refugees - rally 13 August 2010
