By Diet Simon

Update
On Sunday (12 Dec) in classic winter weather 700 people celebrated the cancellation of nuclear waste transportation to Russia from Ahaus by forming a human chain around the temporary dump there. A new demo was called for 30 January outside a nuclear research facility in Jülich, near Cologne, from where 152 containers of waste are shortly to go to Ahaus. Also on 12 December 850 people demonstrated in Freiburg, southwest Germany, for immediate cessation of nuclear power production. There was a Franco-German summit in the town at the time.

by ray jackson, president, indigenous social justice association

two more contributions on the possible changes to the constitution to allow for the proper recognition of the aboriginal and torres strait islander peoples and their unique place in the history of this country.

there are, of course, two main views, the minimalist view and the maximalist view. arising from these two views are many sub-views of what should/must be left out or what to put in.

A peak into the human well being equation

The man who invented the term “Peak Oil” delivered a lecture at Melbourne University on Wednesday night declaring that: “fossil fuel energy does the work we don’t like doing ourselves” and “without energy there can be no economic growth”.

Kjell Aleklett, Professor of Physics at Uppsala University in Sweden and President of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas (ASPO), believes that oil, gas and coal are reaching peak production, which is set to leave the world with a deficit of energy relative to future demand.

Aboriginal housing program exploits Aboriginal workers

Reposted with the kind permission of Green Left Weekly

By Peter Robson

Aboriginal workers are being paid 'next to nothing' to build houses for their people, under the federal government's housing project. Gurindji workers went on strike, October 20.

ALL OK to execute lesbians (& other GBT people) without cause

By Barbary

'Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people were once again subject to the whims of homophobia and religious and cultural extremism this week, thanks to a United Nations vote that removed “sexual orientation” from a resolution that protects people from arbitrary executions. In other words, the UN General Assembly this week voted to allow LGBT people to be executed without cause'.

This is the first sentence of a Facebook post.

I couldn't believe it, so I went to the UN site itself. Here's a bit more:

Lest we forget: The Coniston massacre

Warning: This story includes names of deceased people that may cause sadness or distress to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

By Amanda Midlam

Ask yourself and others a quick quiz. What was the Coniston massacre? Who boasted of having killed 31 people in Australia? What is William George Murray, also known as George William Murray, remembered for? The appalling truth is that for most of us Murray isn’t remembered for anything, yet it was he who boasted of killing 31 people and the true figure is probably much higher.

Mutating fish a wake-up call for human health

His investigation of mass mortality and mutation of hatchery fish has “thoroughly terrified” one of Australia’s leading aquatic veterinarians about the agrochemical pollution of the supposedly pristine Noosa River on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Dr Matt Landos, consultant to most of the country’s fresh water fish hatcheries and most aquatic sectors, accuses Queensland and federal government agencies of dereliction of duty of care.

Another tragic suicide at Villawood as detainees protest

An Iraqi man has tragically taken his own life on Monday 15th November at Villawood. This is the second suicide in two months at the detention centre run by the Multinational Serco. Refugee activists are holding protests outside the centre as detainees go on a hunger strike inside the centre. This suicide comes in the same week as a violent brawl at a Melbourne Detention Centre between Afghan teenagers recently moved from Christmas Island. Just like under Howard, traumatised people are being stressed and broken by the thousands by the Gillard Government with over 5000 people locked up in Australia's immigration gulag's. Just to emphasize the sense of history repeating, the Federal Government has confirmed that 10 asylum seekers have sown their lips together in protest on Christmas Island as the trouble in the detention centres escalates.
