29 workers arrested at Visy in Dandenong- Solidarity Needed!

Around 500 Visy workers across Australia have been on strike since November 29th, 400 of them at the Visy plant in Dandenong. The strike has been over the workers demands that the company stop undermining their job security by forcing casual employment on workers at the factory, as part of latest round of enterprise bargaining. Visy has further angered the protestors by flying in an a scab workforce by helicopter to maintain production at the factory and by taking out injunction on individual workers this morning. Today saw a major escalation of the dispute with at least 29 people being arrested and charged with creating an undue obstruction and besetting the premises. One worker was injured when a truck run over his foot.

Australian Paper - the Scrooges who stole Christmas

You may have heard the story in the media about the paper company Australian Paper attempting to force it's staff at it's Maryvale Mill to work on Christmas Day. And surprise, surprise the "Fair Work" Australia Commissioner (thankyou Gillard and Rudd for keeping Work Choices going, just renaming it) is ready to fine staff if they don't comply.

Ark Tribe found not guilty

The landmark Ark Tribe verdict was handed down this morning at Adelaide Magistrates Court, and he was found not guilty.

In a statement released immediately after the verdict, National Secretary of the CFMEU Construction and General Division, Dave Noonan, says the union is elated.

“We have been fighting this for 18 months, and this is terrific news for Ark and his family.

It proves what a shambles the ABCC is. A worker has been dragged through hell for what?

Thousands rally in support of Ark Tribe and against ALP Building Commission

1500 people rallied in Adelaide outside the Magistrates court where Ark Tribe a CFMEU member faces possible jail time for defying the anti-worker Australian Building Construction Commission (ABCC). Other workers in Melbourne vigiled outside the offices of the ABCC overnight.

Minimum wage rise less than inflation

Fair Work Australia this week lifted the minimum wage by $26 a week or 69c an hour. The minimum wage is now $15 an hour or $569.90 per week. Whilst the agreement was greeted by the ACTU as a very good outcome for working Australians, it actually represents a cut in real wages, the 4.8 percent increase is below the official Consumer Price Index, which has risen 5.4 percent over the past 21 months since the last rise.
