Top-down, bureaucratic neo-liberalism is threatening the Christchurch rebuild – an ethical human rights approach is required.

I consider an ethical, ‘bottom-up’ approach to human rights and development, emphasizing small/medium business development, would enable Christchurch to make the most of its opportunities (And I also think this should be extended to the rest of the country and the world).

I believe this approach will eventually replace neo liberalism.

No coal mine in Bacchus Marsh - locals and activists halt exploratory drilling

Locals and activists from Quit Coal stopped exploratory drilling in Bacchus Marsh today, 50km west of Melbourne. About 20 people occupied a drilling rig belonging to Mantle Mining on the side of Glenmore Road, near the corner of Daisybank Lane, Bacchus Marsh.

Two people locked themselves to the Mantle Mining exploratory drilling rig this morning: Paul Connor climbed to the top of the rig and unfurled a banner which read ‘No New Coal Bacchus Marsh’. Bacchus Marsh mother Natasha Mills, who is pregnant with her second child, locked herself to the bottom of the rig and told reporters "I felt a responsibility to stop drilling today because I’m determined to protect my family from a dangerous coal mine, and I don’t want my children’s future to be marked by run-away climate change."

The incident where Prime Minister Gillard was dragged away by the security forces to the car and speeded away has been portrayed by the media as an attack or riot in Australia Day.

Kids in Leonora called by number, not name

RRAN activists have succeeded in gaining access to visits at the Leonora detention centre. After traveling the 800km from Perth, on Friday Serco and DIAC tried the usual lies to deny visit. "Nobody wants to be visited by you" etc. After much shouting and protesting, with unaccompanied minors and others in the centre joining in, Serco relented and there have been several visits this Saturday. The kids in detention even launched balloons with messages on them, some of which made it into the hands of RRAN activists.
