Sleep out protest at Moreland Council doorstep - July 14th

Anthony Arthur and his dog Princess were left homeless and have been sleeping in Moreland parks since June 2nd after a council inspection led to the closure of their Brunswick rooming house. The operator of Tony’s rooming house chose to shut up shop rather than comply with council orders. “I went to Hume-Moreland housing but as soon as you tell them you have a dog, they say we can’t help you,” said the 46-year-old.

On World Refugee Day in June thousands of us marched through the streets of Melbourne to "Say no to another Tampa election". But that is just what we are getting. Instead of welcoming refugees to this country as we should, both major parties are bickering about how we can "stop the boats" – boats of people fleeing persecution and misery that in many cases Australia had a role in causing.

Last month Adelaide Magistrate David Whittle ruled that the ABCC case against Ark Tribe would continue. This followed a 3-day legal battle that began on Tuesday 15/6 to have the charges dismissed, due to the validity of the proceedings. Brind Zichy – Woinarski QC for the federal DPP and the ABCC argued the Federal Crimes Act allowed the charges to be laid the way they were served on Ark Tribe.
