* MORNINGTON (VICTORIA) BOOK LAUNCH: A DECISION TO DISCRIMINATE - 12 APRIL 2013

- Upcoming Event

Event: Fri 12 April 2013: Mornington, Vic
Book Launch: A Decision to Discriminate
Aboriginal Disempowerment in the Northern Territory
Launched by: Rev Alex Adam, 'concerned Australians'
Organized by Amnesty International
"The event includes a screening of the film 'Our Generation'."
"This new book is an important historical record
that focuses on the Senate Committee Inquiry
into the Stronger Futures legislation. It shows
how the Government decision-making process
chose to ignore the views and ideas expressed
by many Aboriginal people of the Northern Territory
communities in much the same way as has
happened since colonisation."

- Analysis / Opinion

Crosslight: Stronger Futures or just stronger measures?
http://crosslight.org.au/2013/03/31/stronger-futures-or-just-stronger-me...
31 Mar 13: "If people are being harmed and their lives destroyed, it is natural to feel a desire to intervene to try to ease their suffering or solve their problem. Of course, there are many times when you watch someone’s life spiralling out of control and desperately want to step in and help, but you don’t know what to do. You don’t have the answers. When this happens, you might simply listen to what the person is saying and support them in whatever way they need even though you can’t prescribe a neat solution. A compassionate desire to intervene and alleviate another’s suffering is not a bad thing. But ... " By Megan Graham

Goulburn Valley Community Legal Centre: Compulsory Income Management Unfairly Targets Young People
http://gvclc.org.au/income-management-change/
25 Mar 13: "Goulburn Valley CLC is concerned about a shift in the Commonwealth Government’s approach to Shepparton’s Income Management pilot. As we understand it, the Commonwealth Government is set to deem some categories of people as suitable for compulsory income management regardless of their ability to manage their own finances. In short, even if a person is great at budgeting they won’t be given the chance to make their own decisions about how and where they spend their money. ... "
