Forests NSW began logging critical Koala habitat in Bermagui State Forest today.

SFER MEDIA RELEASE 21/06/2011 Forests NSW began logging of Compartment 2001 of Bermagui State Forest today. Cpt 2001 is critical Koala habitat, which FNSW themselves now admit. The Office of Environment and Heritage were unaware that logging had commenced. The logging is on the shores of Black Lagoon, an official sanctuary zone and part of Wallaga Lake Batemans Marine Park.

Tassie activists halt forest work over proposed Tamar pulp mill

SFER Press Release Twenty protesters stopped work in controversial high-conservation-value forests about 50km east of Launceston yesterday.
The protests came despite the peace negotiations between the forestry industry and environmental non-government organisations. The group Community Opposing Destruction of the Environment said the action was in response to forest facilitator Bill Kelty's statement last week that organisations must strike a deal on the Gunns Tamar Valley pulp mill or miss out on the permanent protection of 565,000ha of native forests.

Launch of' International Year of the Forests' a Sham

SFER Press Release 21st March South East Forest Rescue has slammed the National Association of Forest Industries and the woodchipping industry, Forests NSW, Vic Forests and Forestry Tasmania for what they say is misuse of the UN International Year of the Forests logo on a website and reported NAFI to the UN. NAFI is the lobby group for Forests NSW, Vic Forests and Forestry Tasmania. The group say these public companies are the biggest destroyers of forests for woodchips in Australia.

Seven years of clearfelling commences in Gippsland's domestic water supply

Friends of the Earth Melbourne Press release 17th March 2011 Friends of the Earth today warned that the South Gippsland communities of Toora, Welshpool and Port Welshpool, could start to experience declining quality of drinking water after observing yesterday that logging had commenced in the water supply for these communities. The logging probably started three weeks ago said Friends of the Earth Landuse Researcher Anthony Amis. The logging is being conducted by Hancock Victorian Plantations (HVP) in the headwaters of the Agnes River system.

Forests NSW slammed in court for illegal logging

SFER Press Release March 11th 2011:In an unprecedented decision yesterday, at Batemans Bay Local Court, Forests NSW were ordered to pay all costs on two matters. Eleven people were facing 31 charges over 4 days for protests over the logging of Mumbulla Mountain, north east of Bega which began in March last year. Each day was being treated as a separate court case. Crown solicitors were flown in from Sydney to prosecute on behalf of Forests NSW. The three day hearing resulted in all charges bar two being dismissed.

SEFR condemns the latest in an ongoing string of illegal cutting of SE forests

SEFR Press Release Feb 21st This morning conservationists have halted logging in Glenbog State Forest Compartment 2360. Three logging machines are cabled to a tree sit 25 metres above the ground.

Forests NSW and their authorised logging contractors logging practices are being investigated, after more discoveries of breaches including the felling of dead standing trees, no marking up of habitat trees, using habitat trees as bumpers and destroying the habitat of threatened and endangered native animals.

Tasmanian conservationists continue forest vigil Cable loggers sent back to old growth Forest in Picton Valley

Huon Valley Environment Centre Press Release 18.2.11:“Conservationists have today returned to the threatened Picton Valley, where cable loggers have been sent back to clearfell an old growth forest area just weeks before a crucial moratorium deadline. One conservationist has climbed the cable logger and twenty five people are protesting in the forest. The Huon Valley Environment Centre is calling for the state and federal governments to take action to halt the loss of high conservation value forests,” Huon Valley Environment Centre’s spokesperson Jenny Weber said.

SFER Press ReleaseToday South East Forest Rescue have halted logging operations in Bodalla State Forest in the foothills of Gulaga Mountain, south of Narooma, and presented Forests NSW and the logging contractors with a Statement of Guarantee. The Statement of Guarantee sets out terms and conditions requiring Forests NSW to guarantee there will be no impacts on the environment as a result of the logging and to guarantee any logging Forests NSW and their authorised contractors undertake will not impact on the health and wellbeing of the citizens of New South Wales, being both present and future unborn generations. There are three machines attached by cable to a structure in a tree thirty metres off the ground, and an erected banner stating “Carbon Criminals”.

Mumbulla protesters case dismissed

Two members of South East Forest Rescue who protested the illegal logging of a gazetted Aboriginal Place on Mumbulla Mountain, north of Bega last year, were acquitted yesterday when the case was dismissed. Anthony Whan and Scott Daines were in Bega Local Court yesterday. This follows two other cases with the same result.

New report slams Forests NSW illegal logging

SEFR Press Release 8/2/11South East Forest Rescue have joined with the North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) in requesting that the bodies who certify timber sourced from public lands in Upper North East NSW (north from near Coffs Harbour) and the south coast as coming from ecologically sustainable and legal sources, to immediately withdraw their accreditation of Forests NSW. NEFA has today released the report ‘Audit of Compliance of Forestry Operations in the Upper North East NSW Forest Agreement Region’.
