In the final stages of the conflict in the Northern Sri Lanka, the Government of Sri Lanka encouraged hundreds of thousands of Tamil civilians to gather in “No Fire Zones”, where they said they would be safe. Government forces then subjected these zones to sustained shelling. Food queues, hospitals & aid convoys were all attacked by the Sri Lankan military & Government Officials denied adequate supplies of food & medicine to the trapped civilians.

On April 24 "Rana Plaza" a 9-storey building in an industrial suburb of Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh (14 million), collapsed on about 3,500 workers (their number is not known precisely) working there. The building contained five textile factories, as well as a bank and many shops. The official present death toll is 1128, the number of injured is unknown. Most of the victims are women, who constitute 80 to 90% of the workforce in the Bangladeshi textile industry.

In September last year an event happened along the Roper Highway that is just south of Mataranka and heads towards Ngukurr. If this event had happened in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria or any other State it would have caused uproar, Criminal charges laid, Court cases would have followed. Here in the Northern Territory, the Company involved covered their tracks, got people to be silent, then crossed their fingers and hoped ‘lady luck’ would see them through.
