The Green scare hits Australia

With the Herald Sun and The Age hyping a threat by the Earth Liberation Front against the Hazelwood power station's boss it looks like we now have the equivalent of the 1950's red scare going on. Death threats are something that are sent to public figures everyday, but rarely reported. In this case the government and coal companies are attempting to smear anyone opposing coal and particularly those who use direct action.

Update from the Sydney G20 Solidarity Collective

Trials of the three remaining arrestees from the anti-G20 demonstrations in Melbourne 2006 will begin on June 30 at the Melbourne Magistrate's Court. We urge people to come to Melbourne to show their support and political solidarity to the arrestees.

These trials do not mark the first of such kind, but more importantly, they do not mark the last. We need to build a strong culture of providing meaningful political solidarity to those targeted by the state.

Censorship and self-censorship

My latest blog rant approaches the issue of censorship and why we need resources like Indymedia. It was inspired by the latest of many attempts by mining companies and their cronies to silence my reporting on community radio 4ZzZ102.1fm in Brisbane. I've self-censored names to protect the innocent.

Key environment groups dump ACF over carbon trading

In an historic move, several of Australia's key environment groups have abandoned peak environment group the Australian Conservation Foundation for it's support of carbon trading. They have formed a new alliance they are calling "Plan B".

Friends of the Earth Australia (FoEA) said in a statement that, "We’re concerned the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are already above safe levels, and the CPRS will not effectively reduce carbon pollution."

Thousands of donors rescue top Green politician from bankruptcy

Thousands of Australians have rescued Australia's top Green politician, Senator Bob Brown, from a legal bill that would have bankrupted him. He ran up the bill defending his native Tasmania's magnificent old growth forests against logging.

In a note of thanks for donations to court costs he said the action against him was "typical of the pressure tactics used by the native forest logging industry".

Here's the text of a round-robin email from him:

Dear Friend,

Use it or lose it - Australia loses energy daily

By Ray Wills

Calls by the Rudd Government to “use it or lose it†could also equally apply to Australia’s renewable energy resources, according to the Western Australian Sustainable Energy Association Inc. (WA SEA).
‘Australia wastes energy every day, with enough renewable energy to power all of Australia going unused across Australia every day,’ says Dr Ray Wills, WA SEA Chief Executive.

Coroner finds Aboriginal elder "cooked to death" in a police van.

In a damning and disturbing finding today the WA Coroner has released their report into the death of Aboriginal Elder known as Mr Ward. The Coroner found that Mr Ward has died a "ghastly" death and essentially cooked in the police van he was being transported in. This case shows up both institutionalized racism and the flaws in the privatization of correctional services. Justice needs to be served in yet another Aboriginal Death in Custody.
