Michele Harris, 'concerned Australians': Justice
Without Justice there can be no Reconciliation

"Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are." Benjamin Franklin
"In an excellent article (SMH 2 March 2014) by long-time Aboriginal advocate, Sol Bellear, he suggests that reconciliation has failed. This leads me to ask the question, "What is the basis on which reconciliation might be delivered?" While I regularly read of new opportunities that are being promoted for Aboriginal people under the banner of ‘reconciliation’ and I greatly applaud them, at the same time I wonder if we have confused the meaning of the word itself and whether this could be the root of Sol’s conclusion?" Michele Harris, 'concerned Australians'

* JENNE PERLSTEIN, ANTaR VICTORIA: HEALTH IMPACTS OF RACISM
- Analysis / Opinion
ANTaR Victoria: Health Impacts of Racism
http://antarvictoria.org.au/news/health-impacts-of-racism.php
"The Victorian Coalition for Aboriginal Health Equality (CAHEV), based at VACCHO, has released a highly researched and validated statement on racial discrimination and its health impacts. Key highlights are that racism directly contributes to poor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health outcomes, both physically and psychologically, and has contributed to intergenerational trauma. The discrimination comes from both individuals and organisations and is a complex system within our society originating from colonisation, genocide and removal policies." By Jenne Perlstein

13 Mar 14: "March 27: there will be a march against racist policing and racist laws. Meet at the southern end of todd mall at 11am, and we will march to the police station. There will be a BBQ and speakers at the court house lawns afterwards. ... No more racist policing! Aboriginal people are being racially profiled by the police. While the alcohol laws themselves allow racist targetting, the police are abusing even these powers. The banned drinkers register meant that it was problem drinkers who were identified. However now all Aboriginal people are being refused alcohol; it has become an alcohol apartheid town. ... "

14 Mar 14: "Social media can be alternately a wondrous invention of the 21st century whilst also being a curse. ... Such it was last week when news spread rapidly that a publican in Coolgardie had banned Indigenous people from drinking in her pub because her phone was allegedly stolen. A sign, that was quickly photographed and circulated on social media attested to this racist ban. The story of an Aboriginal miner who was refused service and is now seeking legal advice was told. The pub’s page on Facebook was trolled with reviews being written about the regular KKK meetings and the archaic attitudes and decor. In short, some well-oiled internet activism sprung into action and let people know that this was not acceptable. ... " By Celeste Liddle

6 Mar 14: "There has been uproar among First Nations circles in Western Australia over a sign posted by the publican of the Denver City Hotel in regional Coolgaride barring service to First Nations people. The sign has been removed after a social media storm and complaints from prominent First Nations people. The sign is in breach of the Racial Discrimination Act. Publican Deborah Ovens put up the sign "No Indigenous person will be served in this hotel" after her Apple iPhone was stolen. The sign was removed a day later after an photo of the sign went viral on social media and was then reported in various media." Newcastle Herald: Opinion: Racism still dished out on a daily basis

12 Mar 14: "THE outcry over the racist note posted by a publican in Coolgardie in Western Australia in response to her stolen phone has been something of a relief to me. Like so many others, I despaired that in 2014 someone could post a note saying that all Aboriginal people were denied service until the phone was returned. The strong public response that forced an apology was encouraging. ... The sad reality is that unfair and discriminatory treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is not just something from our unenlightened past. They are still subjected to racism, often on a daily basis."
