The abortion wars have not abated. In Victoria, they have recently escalated into a full-on free speech fight as Melbourne City Council targets Radical Women for harassment, including large fines, as they attempt to defend an abortion clinic from far right anti-abortion activists. This has become an important test case not only in the campaign for abortion rights but for the right to protest in Melbourne. Come to the next meeting to help build this important campaign.

In the days after Christmas, while most people are recovering from the indulgence of Christmas Day or deeply immersed in the liturgy of the Boxing Day Test, the Church calendar commemorates the Holy Innocents, the children killed by Herod in a bid to maintain his grip on power. This is a part of the Christmas story which gets little attention in churches, yet it forms a major part of the biblical birth narrative.

Snap Action: All I Want For Christmas Are My Penalty Rates

Date and Time:
Tue, 21/12/2010 -
10:00am to 11:00am
Location:
Parliament House Steps Spring Street Melbourne, Australia

Ted Baillieu has been a naughty boy this Christmas. (As was Brumby before him!)

Victoria is the only state in Australia where workers will not receive penalty rates if they have to work on Christmas day. This means Victorian workers who are rostered on for Christmas will not be entitled to compensation for sacrificing time with family and friends.

Defend workers rights and tell Ted that workers deserve better this Christmas! Christmas hats will be provided courtesy of the Christmas Solidarity Network.

Your Rights @ Christmas: worth fighting for!

Update: Visy workers win dispute

Update December 17th 2010 - all charges have now been dropped against the strikers and the dispute has been settled with the agreement of the union. Visy has agreed to not freeze the conditions of casual employees - the major sticking point in negotiations.

This is a great result for a group of workers who stared down government and police harassment. Congratulations to all those in the community and other unions who stood by these workers.

Visy workers secure casual pay rates and vote to return to work - Dec 17, 2010
