Is it better for the environment to be vegetarian? Or is animal-based permaculture actually better for the land? Are animals equal to humans, and should we stop eating meat altogether to put an end to the torture of the war machine? But won't the health of human communities suffer if we don't eat meat? Join ex-vegan and permaculturist Evan Young and DJ De-Anarky as we discuss and debate the ethics of vegetarianism, in the context of global environmental crisis.

Save Ballarrt Mooroop College Campaign Update: (15th August 2011)

Workers returned to the site today still without a Traffic Management Plan endorsed by Council - This is a breach of OH&S. The workers requested Police protection! (while they are breaching the OH&S law!) - They seemed to think that if a Traffic Management Plan is being worked on they can still work there. 'Work Safe' have been advised and are sending an Inspector to the site.

Local residents who parked their cars in Trevannion and Hilton Street corner earlier today have been requested by police, to move them. - CFMEU have also been advised that the workers are in breach of OH&S.

Over 500 people at the inaugural Anarchist Melbourne Bookfair

A large and diverse crowd participated in the first anarchist bookfair in Australia, held on Saturday 13th August at Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne. Over 500 people visited the open, welcoming, and child-friendly space filled by twenty-seven stalls of activist groups and political bookshops and publishers. Workshops ran all day on the theory, strategies and tactics of the struggle against capitalism and for a world of social and environmental justice. They included 'Apocalypse Now or Community to the Rescue?', 'Beyond the Gender Binary', 'Genocide, Sovereignty Treaty', 'What, no bosses?' and much more.

Before next year's Anarchist Melbourne Bookfair there will be Camp Anarchy: three days of discussion, music and films to strengthen networks and move from ideas to action.

Defend Cement Creek: Localsto join the biggest picnic ever to protect their forests!

Date and Time:
Sun, 14/08/2011 -
11:00am to 2:00pm
Location:
11 am car-pooling from Warburton, Café Mechanica 11.30 am at Picnic site, 7.5km from the rainforest gully walk, on Acheron Way, look for flags.

The forests of Cement Creek (East Warburton), in one of Melbourne’s pristine water catchments, are under immediate threat from clear fell logging for paper & pulp.

After ten years of campaigning and a rally in Warburton where a thousand attended, Cement Creek was deferred from logging, in 2008. Now local conservationists are alarmed to find Cement Creek rescheduled for logging. They feel heart-broken and disregarded, particularly after just escaping black Saturday where over 400,000 Ha of The Central Highlands was burnt.

Indiginous cultural education rights undermined by Liberal Minister

The timing was impeccable. The contrast could not be more stark. On the United Nations International Day of the World's Indigenous People (August 9th, 2011) an order was made to smash and desecrate a unique expression of Aboriginal Culture in Victoria.

On August 9th, 2011, the United Nations General Secretary implored us all "Together, let us celebrate and recognize the stories, cultures and unique identities of indigenous peoples around the world. At the same time, let us work to strengthen their rights and support their aspirations.” (http://www.un.org/en/events/indigenousday/)
