13 Aug 13: "Rosalie Kunoth was born in 1937 at Utopia Cattle Station (Arapunya) in the Northern Territory of Australia to parents of the Amatjere people. ... In August of that year [2011] she went to Canberra for Amnesty International and denounced Federal government intervention in the Northern Territory as a "huge violation of human rights," displacing "more indigenous people from their traditional lands, depriving them of opportunities to speak their native language and severing links with [their] culture. ... "

21 Aug 13: "Central Land Council Chair Maurie Ryan says the Chief Minister Adam Giles’ plans to restore power to Indigenous men will not be gained by a his idea of a "First Circle" of Aboriginal people to meet the NT Cabinet during the year.
"First Circles? Who does he think we are? Children at pre-school?
"And meeting with Cabinet is hardly game changing, although we appreciate the sentiment," Mr Ryan said.
"If Mr Giles is worried about Aboriginal men’s role in society breaking down then perhaps he may like to address the alcohol situation more realistically and take some advice from the people who have worked for years in the area of preventing alcohol abuse."
Mr Ryan said giving people meaningful employment and decent governance structures that really empowered them would also go a long way to restoring Aboriginal men’s pride in themselves. ... "

20 Aug 13: "The Chair of the Central Land Council Maurie Ryan has questioned the Opposition’s plans to appoint Warren Mundine as the head of a prime ministerial indigenous council if it wins the next election.
"The members of the Land Council find it unacceptable that policy affecting them may be dictated by somebody who doesn’t understand the issues affecting them.
"Unfortunately Mr Mundine seems to be unaware of the significant changes made in recent years and he needs to update his knowledge of the current situation in the Northern Territory," Mr Ryan said.
Mr Ryan said Mr Mundine’s four fundamental principles of governance, land ownership, social stability and openness provide nothing new.
"These are issues that we have all been working on for a long time, not in city board rooms but out on the ground in the bush," he said. ... "

23 Aug 13: "ON 23 AUGUST 1966, the Gurindji people walked off the job at Wave Hill Station in the Northern Territory in protest over low wages, bad work conditions and the dispossession of their land. ... The 250 men, women and children were led by Vincent Lingiari, a community elder and head stockman at the 26,975sq.km cattle station 600km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. A nine-year strike followed that remains the longest in Australian history, ending with the handing back of the land to the Gurindji by the Australian government. ... " Text by Jude Dineley
