Solidarity protest at Egyptian consulate Melbourne

People gathered in Melbourne outside the Egyptian Consulate today to express their frustration at a tired dictatorial regime and solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of fellow Egyptians taking over the streets and towns of Egypt. Egyptians everywhere want Mubarak and his Government to go. The people have lost their fear.

People again gathered in Melbourne to show their support for Wikileaks. The rally commenced at the Melbourne State Library with a variety of speakers including Adam Bandt (Greens Federal MP), Rob Stary( Assange's Lawyer in Australia) and Brian Boyd (Secretary Victorian Trades Hall).

Egyptian government pulls the plug on internet access in response to protests

At 12.30am Egyptian time on January 28, the plug was pulled in Egypt on all internet traffic for all major internet providers. Egypt is almost entirely offline. The move was made to stop people organising protests through social media sites like twitter and Facebook. See Live updates below...

Hunger strike at Curtin detention centre

Hundreds of asylum seekers largely from Afghanistan are currently on a hunger strike at Curtin Detention Centre. Many fearing deportation back to war torn Afghanistan after the Australian Government this week struck a deal with the corrupt Karzai government on returning "failed" asylum seekers. One asylum seeker also attempted suicide. Despite attempts by Serco and the Immigration Department to play down the protest, messages form the asylum seekers have started to reach the outside world.

2,200 protest at plutonium shipments from UK to Germany

About 2,200 nuclear opponents demonstrated outside the Grohnde power station in central north Germany on Sunday 16 January. The protesters, from very young to quite elderly, squatted outside the nuke in a symbolic action. They demanded that the federal and state governments scrap nuclear transport plans.

Wikileaks supporters rally in Sydney

About a thousand people rallied in Sydney on Saturday in support of wikileaks and Julian Assange. Assange is presently under house arrest in England fighting an extradition notice to Sweden over sexual assault allegations. Wikileaks continues publishing US diplomatic cables exposing the corruption of secret government policy and action, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Forcing the government to give justice

A Preston couple, Chris and Susan Field, are among a growing number of home owners objecting to bank fraud and injustice in the courts.
In late December the Fields were the lead story on both A Current Affair and Today Tonight at the same time. They have already been EVICTED from their home, BUT THEY WENT BACK IN a week later and are still living in their own home.
Serena Moeau was also featured on the Current Affair story, about her four year battle against the bank that wants her home.

Activist brings offshore gas tug to a halt

A local activist has prevented the tug supplying the controversial offshore gas drilling rig from leaving the Port of Newcastle by attaching himself inside the tug.

The Tour Maline, which is berthed at the T1 terminal at Honeysuckle, was preparing itself to send supplies to the Ocean Patriot for exploratory drilling for gas and other minerals 55km off the shore of Newcastle.

Rising Tide spokesperson Phillipa Parsons said that offshore gas and/or oil drilling was too risky and could destroy the marine and coastal environment.

WikiLeaks protesters march in Sydney despite police intimidation

After a speakout at Sydney's Town Hall on Tuesday December 14, a large group of 1000 protesters successfully marched to Martin Place, despite numerous attempted police blockades.

Police violently assaulted four protesters, to issue fines for obstructing traffic, but it was police that were holding up the traffic for US TV star Oprah Winfrey, who had closed down much of the city to broadcast a show from the Opera House.

10 weeks ago... 100 people break out of Darwin Detention Centre screaming a message of desperation, hope and freedom that the media does everything to silence.

2 months ago... Josefa Rauluni dies in Villawood detention centre on the day he is expecting to be deported. He feared death and torture upon return to Fiji.
