climate change

Open letter to Federal MP Kelvin Thompson and the ACF

To whom it may concern,

In response to the ACF media release “Population boom will bust environment and quality of life” (22 September 2009):

The opinion presented is overly simplistic and inherently flawed as several of the implicit assumptions cannot be backed up by robust arguments. Exposing the nationalist agenda of this statement is in the interests of fairness in informing a free-thinking, democratic society. A nationalistic perspective on climate change is inconsistent with the inexorably global nature and scale of the manifold impacts of a modified climate.

Address to "Switch Off Hazelwood" Climate Protest at Hazelwood Power Station, in Morwell, Victoria, by Dr Merryn Redenbach

On Sunday 13th September, after an overnight climate camp in Morwell, Victoria, five hundred protesters gathered outside Hazelwood coal fired power station. Hazelwood is one of the developed world's most polluting power stations. Among the five speakers to the rally, Dr Merryn Redenbach, a paediatric doctor and one of the protest organizers, spoke about the impacts of climate change and why the protesters were willing to risk arrest for trespass to promote the transition to renewable energy and closing down coal fired power stations.

Switch off Hazelwood coverage

The direct action Switch Off Hazelwood held on September 12th-13th was a huge success for the Climate Change Movement in Victoria. Over 500 people attended the non-violent direct action which resulted in 22 people being arrested and wide media coverage. The day as promised was one of empowering and creative civil disobedience demanding governments switch off coal and switch on renewables.

Switch off Hazelwood - only two weeks left

We are now less than two weeks away from the Switch off Hazelwood – Switch on Renewables, day of peaceful community protest.Things are going incredibly well in the lead up to the weekend of camping and action for renewable energy. There have been multiple skill shares where people have learnt why we are protesting at Hazelwood, what sort of events are planned throughout the day (and evening before), how they can form affinity groups to plan their own involvement in the day.
