China: Psychiatric torture of Falun Gong practitioners in hospitals

Twelve years ago, in Beijing, approximately 10,000 Chinese citizens peacefully gathered in Zhongnanhai (central headquarters of the communist government), to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong*1, an ancient Chinese exercise and meditation practice. Under the then dictator, Jiang Zemin, the Chinese Communist Party was ordered on July 20, 1999 to “eradicate” Falun Gong practitioners financially, physically and mentally by any means. Since then, this nonviolent group has undergone the most horrific persecution in modern history.

Climate change blamed in extreme shift from drought to flood in China

An extreme shift in weather in June across much of southern and eastern China has been put down to the effects of global warming and climate change. Usually light rains start in June in the middle and lower Yangtze valley leading in to the summer monsoonal rains and typhoon season, but this year torrential rains and storms struck on June 3 and have continued unleashing devastating floods, the worst in over 50 years.

Spontaneous celebration filled Times Square, crowds gathered in front of the White House euphorically cheering “USA, USA, USA”. Mass hysteria broke out on the social networking scene with Twitter reporting 4000 tweets per second as news of Osama Bin Laden’s murder broke out.

Conservationists have criticised the Queensland State Government and Federal Government for the expansion of LNG and coal for export without acknowledging the environmental harm that will be caused both on land and sea by these industries. Chinese bulk coal carrier the Shen Neng 1 grounded on a reef, is leaking oil and in danger of breakup in a restricted zone about 70km east of Great Keppel Island. It grounded just after 5pm Saturday April 3, 15km from the nearest shipping channel in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, a World Heritage listed area.

Crackdown on Rio Tinto bosses a good thing

The Australian mainstream media are full of denunciations of China over the trial of the four Rio Tinto executives in Shanghai. However, from the standpoint of trade unionists and opponents of the oppression of Aboriginal people and the peoples of the ex-colonies, the prosecution of the Rio bosses is a good thing.
