Rally: End Indefinite Detention, End ASIO Checks on Refugees

Date and Time:
Fri, 25/05/2012 -
12:30pm to 1:30pm
Location:
Department of Immigration and Citizenship Melbourne,

At least 56 refugees are facing indefinite detention after being declared a 'security threat' by ASIO. This includes two families with young children. They have no right to review or appeal the decision, nor do they have the right to know the grounds on which they have been rejected. Three Tamil refugees rejected by ASIO have attempted suicide in Broadmeadows detention centre. Alongside this mounting despair inside the camps, there is a growing chorus of outrage against this affront to natural justice.

Jasee is the third Tamil with a negative ASIO security clearance to try and take his own life this month. Renegade Activists presents to you a weekend of ideas to challenge Capitalism. Over the last year we have seen and been involved in vastly different struggles taking on the system.

The world rose as one to Occupy and the Arab spring rocked the very foundations of the system.
Leaders have come and gone and not just in Canberra and austerity cuts have forced people the world over into struggle.

On top of the economic crises we still face the environmental impacts of human made climate change.
With an Environmental movement (mainly) unwilling to put blame at the problem Capitalism.

There are currently two major political trials going on in the Australian court system. Firstly there are the 16 pro-Palestine protesters who are on trial for their participation in a demonstration against the Israeli owned Max Brenner chocolate shop. They are facing fines of tens of thousands of dollars for the 'crime' of 'trespassing in a public place.' The other is the Occupy trial - a case which is attempting to defend our legitimate right to public civil disobedience.

We have received Reports of more than 100 police arriving in Broome, their intentions look to be to crush the Broome community’s peaceful protest and dismantle all blockade capabilities. They have warned the blockade camp that they must be gone by Wednesday. We need as many people as possible to show our support for those blockading, and send a message to police and Joint Venture Partners that brutality and intimidation will not discourage us, it will only make us stronger.
