Behind the Rainbow

With the South African 2009 presidential election as a backdrop, award-winning filmmaker Jihan El-Tahri explores the evolution of the African National Congress (ANC) from liberation movement to ruling party.

In interviews, ANC leaders past and present examine the divisions over ideology and economic policy that have replaced the euphoria surrounding Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1992. They also analyse why harsh racial inequalities, poverty and unemployment persist.

Victory in court for Stop the Afghan War peace protestors – followed by nine more arrests

Four peace protestors the “Bonhoeffer 4” who trespassed on and successfully shut down for a day, the secretive Swan Island military base on March 31st have had their charges dismissed by a Geelong Magistrate. Despite pleading guilty to trespass, the Magistrate chose to use a little known provision of the crimes act which allowed him to dismiss the charges altogether! Forty protestors soon after returned to the gates of the base for a further protest calling for Australian troops to be pulled out of Afghanistan and nine people who refused to move were arrested for hindering police.

On June 18th we will protest the 3rd year of the Northern Territory Intervention. Kevin Rudd has continued and extended the Intervention policy towards Aboriginal people pushed through in the final days of the Howard era.

The Intervention was based upon the suspension of the Racial Discrimination Act (RDA), indicating the racist basis of the Intervention. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin claims her new Intervention legislation is ‘reinstating the RDA’. This is a lie.

An Eyewitness to popular struggle

Nepal’s poor majority are struggling for a “New Nepal” based on popular democracy and social justice.

Led by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists (UCPN-M), the poor have brought down a king and are confronting the US and Indian-backed elite that removed the UCPN-M-led government last year.

Nepali solidarity activist, Ben Peterson, will speak on the Nepali people’s attempts to found a new society.
