Update: Defending Melbourne's Aboriginal school

Below is an update from the Melbourne Anti-Intervention Collective from the 16th December
We have been supporting the campaign to defend Ballerrt Mooroop College because we think a great injustice is occurring. The imposition of this non-Indigenous school on Aboriginal land is an attack on the idea of educating in a cultural way. Simply put, it is an extension of cultural genocide against Aboriginal people.

Christmas may be a time of joy and holiday for some, but for asylum seekers and refugees locked up on Christmas Island and immigration detention centres around Australia, there is no respite from the degradation and uncertainty of not knowing when you will be released, deported back to danger or continue to be locked up indefinitely.

International 24hrs of action for Tasmania’s ancient forests

December 14th/15th 2010, saw the biggest show of support for Tasmania’s ancient forests in history. In just over 24 hours, there were banner actions and film screenings in Tanzania, Reunion Island, Japan, Vanuatu, Thailand, India, France, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, England, Wales, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Ireland, Scotland, Ecuador and the United States of America.

After two rallies in Melbourne of over one thousand people we need to continue the fight to defend freedom of speech and to defend Wikileaks.

In Sydney the protest was attacked by the police. Oppose such flagrant violations of our rights.

A warm early summer day in Melbourne, with crowds of Christmas shoppers strolling the streets and city workers heading home on a Tuesday evening. Into this mix a gathering slowly grows on the lawn of the State Library. A gathering for free speech, to defend Julian Assange and the Wikileaks website.

Meat workers in Brooklyn, Melbourne, locked out.

ABOUT 140 meatworkers have been locked out of a meat processing plant in Brooklyn in Melbourne's west after picketing their workplace since Friday 10th December. The workers are trying to win a decent pay rise. Their employer Swift Australia, Australia's biggest meat packer and exporter, is only offering them a 2 percent pay rise, for which they are meant to worked for reduced penalty rates on a Saturday. vowed to picket until Christmas if necessary after being locked out of a Brooklyn plant.

29 workers arrested at Visy in Dandenong- Solidarity Needed!

Around 500 Visy workers across Australia have been on strike since November 29th, 400 of them at the Visy plant in Dandenong. The strike has been over the workers demands that the company stop undermining their job security by forcing casual employment on workers at the factory, as part of latest round of enterprise bargaining. Visy has further angered the protestors by flying in an a scab workforce by helicopter to maintain production at the factory and by taking out injunction on individual workers this morning. Today saw a major escalation of the dispute with at least 29 people being arrested and charged with creating an undue obstruction and besetting the premises. One worker was injured when a truck run over his foot.

Rally to defend Julian Assange and Wikileaks

As announced at Friday's Melbourne demonstration, there will be a protest on Tuesday, Dec 14 to defend Julian Assange and Wikileaks.

We need to keep the pressure up and voice our outrage at this assault on freedom of speech and democratic rights.

The rally will coincide with Julian Assange's next court hearing of his application to be released from detention in Britain on bail.

Like last time, spread the word like wildfire....
