Australia has just faced what is probably its most costly "natural" disaster. Tens of our fellow Australians have lost their lives and thousands have lost their homes and livelihoods.

Climate scientists have been telling us for years that as the Earth warms due to our greenhouse gas emissions we will experience ever worsening natural disasters, including droughts, bushfires and floods. We are seeing the impacts of climate change right now.

Message from hunger strikers in Curtin Detention Centre

Thursday, 20 January 2011, 3:11 pm Press Release: Project SafeCom
"The continuous spin lines trotted out by the Department of Immigration to media representatives about the Curtin Detention Centre hunger strike, claiming that between 20 and 30 people are participating in the strike, amount to craven lies and callous misrepresentations, and they are eroding the Department's own ethical slogan that "people are our business" to the core," WA Human Rights group Project SafeCom said this morning.

Community assembly underway at Swift Australia

Reprinted from the Workers Solidarity Network website. Striking cold store workers at Swift Australia voted against the latest in a string of condescending offers from management today, as Workers Solidarity Network members and union activists assembled at the site. The workers’ supporters blocked trucks throughout the day, sending a message to the company that endless stalling and bad-faith negotiation must end.Confident despite their five-week ordeal, the workers reminded those attempting to cross the picket that Swift cannot be allowed to set this precedent for the mistreatment of workers, and that ‘touch one, touch all’ applies now more than ever.
