In Australia many activists have identified this and have sought to create links of solidarity and struggle with grassroots organisati...ons in Latin America that, with creativity and commitment, are pushing for deep changes in their respective countries.

Free political prisoners in West Papua - rally at Indonesian consulate, Melbourne, 8 April 2011

The Morning Star flew in front of the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne this morning as members of the West Papua community and supporters gathered to demand the release of political prisoners and an end to torture and repression.

The particular focus of the action was the case of Filep Karma - see this Amnesty USA video on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp6uiIr-efg - sentenced in May 2005 to 15 years imprisonment for treason.

Police claim they capsicum sprayed protestor to protect him!

Oliver Ball the protestor who was capsicum sprayed twice by police at the rally against mandatory detention at the Broadmeadows Detention Centre on April 2nd has spoken extensively to the mainstream media about the police violence used against him. He has also brought the video footage of this disgusting attack on a peaceful protestor to the attention of the media as well receiving coverage on John Faine's 774 show, ABC online, the Herald Sun, The Age and the report by AAP has also been circulated widely.
