The Background

The Occupy Melbourne protests have been going on for 3 months now, pushing limits imposed on them by council, police, and the state.
Love them, hate them, don't care about them, they're there and it doesn't appear they'll be going away any time soon.

Many people are unsure about what the Occupiers want, what their demands are, or what they have to say about various issues facing Australians and the world. Many people have the idea that the occupiers don't know what they're aiming for and are just doing it because they have nothing better to do.

Memorial for Indigenous freedom fighters gathering momentum in 2012 - videos

On January 20, 2012 about 150 people gathered in Melbourne to commemorate the lives of two indigenous Australian freedom fighters and push for a permanent monument to be erected in their honour. Speeches were made after a solemn welcome to country was given by Bunwurrung elder Caroline Briggs. The momentum for a permanent memorial is gathering: this year three councilors from Melbourne City Council attended and expressed their support.

Wed, 01/02/2012 -
12:30pm to 3:30pm
Location:
Victorian Parliament Steps, Spring St, Melbourne

On the eve of the federal government decision that could make or break HRL, the proposed new coal-fired power station for Victoria, it’s up to us to convince the politicians that in 2012, new coal-fired power stations are a dud investment.

In 2007, the Howard Government awarded HRL a grant of $100 million. But 5 years later, HRL have failed to meet the conditions of the grant and no money has changed hands – yet. Now this federal government funding is under review.

The mainstream media has said many things about Occupy Melbourne, sometimes taking things out of context, always putting a spin on the events and views of the protesters to "maybe" suit mainstream media and big business interests.

As such I thought to myself it'd be a good idea to go straight to the source and show the public what the Occupy Melbourne protesters have to say themselves about why they Occupy, the issues surrounding Australians, and what sort of things they experienced on the dark day which was October 21st (Eviction Day).

A candlelight vigil is planned for Wednesday 18 January outside the Broadmeadows detention centre to support a 33-year-old Iranian asylum seeker who is in the 8th day of a hunger strike. Another Iranian refugee was on hunger strike for three days before calling off his hunger strike after being promised information about his case.

The two men are in detention in the Melbourne immigration Transit Centre (MITA) at Camp Road, Broadmeadows.

Regular visitor to the detention centre and Refugee Action Collective spokesperson Daniella Olea said she met the two men on Saturday 14 January.
