Forest protest hits Harvey Norman

Homeless animals move into Harvey Norman store.

Today a group of Tasmanian animals including Tasmanian devils and quolls moved into the Harvey Norman store in Hobart. Conservationists from Still Wild Still Threatened, dressed as native animals, occupied the store, calling for Harvey Norman to stop sourcing native forest products. One protestor dressed as a Swift Parrot climbed a light post outside the store, displaying a banner reading “Stop selling native animal habitat.”

Australia marks Survival/Invasion Day 2011

Australia Day on January 26th marks the day Europeans began their occupation of Aboriginal land. The process of occupation and colonisation has been a devastating one for the indigenous occupants of Australia. Mainstream Australia celebrated the day by proudly waving the flag on their cars, clothing or even draping themselves in the "Cronulla cape". Others were “relaxed and comfortable” as John Howard urged us years ago and attended bbq's or the beach. However many Australians attended events that called for justice for Indigenous Australia and to reject the idea that January 26th is a day that all Australians should “celebrate”. In Tasmania 400 people marched to demand a change to our national day. In Belgrave in Melbourne others attended a Survival Day concert. In Sydney hundreds marched in Redfern against the Intervention before attending the 2011 Yabun Festival. Hundreds also marched Brisbane at an invasion day rally.

Aborigines ecstatic at emergency listing of Brighton historic area

The news that the Brighton historic area beside the Jordan River has received listing as one of Australia's outstanding heritage places is a fantastic boost to the chances of saving the area from destruction, Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre legal director Michael Mansell said. "The listing places the significance of the Jordan River area alongside Kakadu National Park, Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef. This is just a wonderful Christmas present to the people of Tasmania from the Australian Government."

Hobart: rally for free speech, Wikileaks and human rights

Over 200 people turned up for a Human Rights Day rally in Hobart in support of free speech, Julian Assange and the Wikileaks website on Saturday.

Meeting on the Parliament House lawns the rally heard speakers from the Democrats, Socialist Alliance, and a message of support from Independent MP Andrew Wilkie.

We are asking for you to join with us at a Peoples Assembly in Canberra at the opening of Parliament on Tuesday 28 September (2010).

We will assemble on the lawns outside Parliament House to call on the new Parliament to introduce humane refugee policies and stop using refugees as political footballs. Refugee groups are asked to bring banners with the key messages of the gathering as well as their own messages.

Tasmanian environment groups will join with communities around the country tomorrow to voice concerns in a nationwide Day of Action against the burning of native-forest products in power stations to generate electricity.

Wood-fired power generators would adversely impact Tasmania’s clean, clever brand and represent a major new threat to both high conservation-value forests and the ability to reach agreement around a lasting solution to the forestry crisis in Tasmania.
