996 Aboriginal deaths by suicide - another shameful Australian record

Gerry Georgatos - courtesy of The Stringer - http://thestringer.com.au/ Australia’s Aboriginal peoples are suiciding at the world’s highest rates. Standalone, racially Aboriginal peoples endure horrific statistics unparalleled by the rest of Australia and more voices are rising to highlight and address what they see as criminal neglect by Australian governments. In collating data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there have been 996 reported Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suicides between 2001 to 2010.

Just weeks ago, the United States was on the verge of launching war against Syria, an act of aggression that threatened to trigger a broader conflict with Iran, Russia and China.

In the face of overwhelming popular opposition to war within the United States and internationally, the Obama administration made a tactical retreat. It seized upon a Russian proposal to secure a United Nations resolution dictating the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons, and opened up talks to extract political concessions from Iran.

O’Farrell plans to shut prisoner halfway houses

The NSW government is planning to close seven prisoner halfway houses in a bid to save money.

The homes are designed to help former prisoners reintegrate into the community.

The planned cuts to the parole scheme with affect more than 100 prisoners and 60 public servants will lose their jobs.

The Public Service Association has slammed the move as short sighted and says the cuts may prompt reoffending.

There are also plans to ask charities and NGO’s to run some of the centres.
