(Transcript from World News Australia Radio) Arabunna elder Kevin Buzzacott has pleaded with BHP not to make him bankrupt. Mr Buzzacott took BHP to court over its expansion of its Olympic Dam uranium mine, but lost and had to pay court costs. 21 Nov 13: "BHP Billiton would neither confirm nor deny that it plans to pursue a South Australian Aboriginal elder for court costs. Kevin Buzzacott of the Arabunna people was ordered by the Federal Court to pay costs to the SA and Federal Governments and BHP after a failed appeal over the expansion of the Olympic Dam uranium, copper and gold mine. Mr Buzzacott argued the proposed expansion, which has since been shelved, was approved without proper consideration of the long term environmental impact." Babs McHugh

Karlamilyi (Rudall River) national park encompasses spinifex plains, red desert sands, salt lakes and ancient gorges that protect pristine rock pools and swimming holes. A proposal for an open cut uranium mine just 500m from Yantikuji Creek by Canadian mining giant Cameco is putting all of this at risk. Our national parks deserve good neighbours, not uranium mines. Traditional owners in Kakadu National Park have been rocked by a second security breach in two weeks at the Ranger uranium mine, and say the site's radiation control measures are failing. Four uranium storage barrels were discovered in bushland outside of Darwin on Monday, outraging the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation (GAC), which acts on behalf of the Mirarr people." Source AAP

29 Nov 13: "Nearly one quarter of the population of the Northern Territory community of Nhulunbuy will be out of work when Rio Tinto closes it's alumina refinery. The company will begin phasing out production of aluminium at the beginning of next year, putting over one thousand Indigenous workers out of employment. The company has come under intense criticism in parliament today, the Prime Minister Tony Abbott saying Rio Tinto has an obligation to the community and especially to those who have bought houses and businesses in the area."

26 Nov 13: "Today, the Federal Court of Australia recognised the Ewamian Peoples’ native title rights and various interests over its traditional lands in north Queensland in two consent determinations. Elders fought long and hard to get to today where the determinations were handed down in Georgetown. Land within the vicinity of Georgetown, Forsyth, Einasleigh and Mt Surprise today are the focus of a full day of celebrations and commemoration for Ewamian (pronounced Oor-am-in) people. Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Ken Georgetown said it was a huge milestone for his community with the first claims being lodged in 1997." By The Stringer
