Issue 14 - September 2013: "Arguing the Intervention compiles in one issue of the Journal of Indigenous Policy a selection of 39 research-based short essays about the Intervention published in the media over five years. This time frame represents the period between the announcement of the Intervention on 21 June 2007 and the expiry of Northern Territory National Emergency Response laws after 18 August 2012. Thirty-eight of the 39 pieces were published within this time frame, two were co-authored and one is a robust published exchange between Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin and myself." * JON ALTMAN, TRACKER: EVIDENTLY: STAND AGAINST INDIGENOUS POVERTY

- Analysis / Opinion

Tracker: Evidently: Stand against Indigenous poverty
http://tracker.org.au/2013/09/evidently-stand-against-indigenous-poverty/
16 Sep 13: "NATIONAL: The Oceanic chapter of the group Academics Stand Against Poverty (ASAP) approached me to provide input to an audit being undertaken of the policy platforms of the major parties in the lead up to the 2013 federal election, writes Jon Altman. Poverty struck me as an important issue to consider. In all the cacophony about Closing the Gap why is there never mention of the poverty gap between Indigenous and other Australians nor of the social and economic costs of its existence and persistence? ... In my view poverty alleviation for many Indigenous Australians will only occur if the policy focus is on livelihoods and accommodates diverse circumstances, is realistic, and is community driven rather than dictated from Canberra." By Jon Altman, a professor in economics/anthropology, Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research, Australian National University. He has worked on Indigenous economic development issues since 1976.

9 Sep 13: "There has been a lot of talk about how Tony Abbott wants to be the Prime Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. ... But while indigenous advocates hail a new era of government cooperation, there is less detail and discussion about the direction of indigenous health policy under an Abbott-led government. Warren Mundine himself recently made comments suggesting a possible military-style intervention into indigenous health services, which has generated discussion about what is the best way to bridge the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous healthcare."

2 Sep 13: "In our collective living memories it is a rare occurrence that both people vying for Office are regular Church going Christians. It is extraordinary to us as practicing Christians and a matter of shame therefore, that both of you are determined to win office by continuing cruel, oppressive and wasteful policies towards the Aboriginal and Islander First Peoples, towards desperate Refugees and Asylum Seekers , and also by deliberate disregard for the perilous state of the Earth under global warming. ... 16 Sep 13: "NATIONAL: Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott has named his first cabinet and outer ministry – with NT Senator Nigel Scullion confirmed as Indigenous affairs minister. Senator Scullion is also the leader of the Nationals in the Senate. There will be no Minister for Indigenous Health or for Indigenous employment – which were junior portfolios under Labor. Mr Abbott announced during the election campaign that the Indigenous affairs portfolio would be placed within Prime Minister and Cabinet, and that he would like to be a "Prime Minister for Indigenous Affairs"." * GREENS SENATORS RACHEL SIEWERT & PENNY WRIGHT: ABBOTT CUTS TO INDIGENOUS LEGAL SERVICES HYPOCRITICAL

- Media Release

Greens Senators Rachel Siewert & Penny Wright: Abbott cuts to Indigenous legal services hypocritical
Rachel Siewert: http://rachel-siewert.greensmps.org.au/content/media-releases/abbott-cut...
Penny Wright: http://penny-wright.greensmps.org.au/content/media-releases/abbott-cuts-...
6 Sep 13: "Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Issues ...
The Australian Greens have condemned Tony Abbott's cuts to the Indigenous Legal Assistance and Policy Reform Program, saying it goes against all his past rhetoric and will exacerbate the shameful incarceration rates for Indigenous Australians.
"Tony Abbott says he wants to prioritise efforts to end Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disadvantage, but cutting Indigenous legal aid funding undermines this commitment," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues.
"Australia has appallingly high incarceration rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and this over representation of Aboriginal people in prisons is a cause for national shame.
"It is critical that Aboriginal communities have access to legal services, cutting this essential funding is nonsensical and contrary to Mr Abbott's public commitments to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people," Senator Siewert concluded. ... "

* AMY MCQUIRE, TRACKER: THE R WORD [RECOGNISE]

- Analysis / Opinion

agendaTracker: The R Word
http://tracker.org.au/2013/09/the-r-word/
9 Sep 13: "NATIONAL: The Recognise "movement" is a public relations triumph, but it still has a long way to go to sell its agenda to blackfellas, writes Amy McQuire*. ... It seems to me the agenda is to keep our mob complacent, to placate them with promises that will be very hard to accomplish, attracting them with shiny things that in the end will have little value. The true value is in advocating for a treaty and land rights - the jewels that are mined within our own communities, rather than extracted by big government machines intent on using them for their own interests. Let us line our nests with those objects instead. They are no longer as shiny, but with a little work, we can brush off the dust."
